Cara Gavagan has joined the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association as senior director of Government and Political Affairs. She is responsible for fundraising activities behind NRMCA’s CONCRETEPAC, the concrete industry’s premier political action committee, and managing high-impact programs on Capitol Hill. Gavagan was previously director of PAC operations at the American Council of Engineering Companies, where she helped create a committee securing $1.5 million per cycle; managed event planning associated with all PAC activities and political involvement; and, coordinated marketing and other association communications.

New York-based Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects (TWBTA) has joined a design and construction team providing pro bono services for a Highlands, N.J., concrete structure overlooking Sandy Hook, an area hit hard in October 2012 by Hurricane Sandy. Tilt-Up Concrete Association member Alston Construction Co. is leading the project toward an early-October dedication.

Everything’s bigger in Texas: World’s largest tilt-up building en route

Osaka, Japan-based Daikin Industries, Ltd., the leading global manufacturer in heating, cooling and refrigerant products, is expanding its Goodman Manufacturing Co. operations in the United States by constructing a state-of-the-art business campus near Houston. The Texas-sized development, designed by Powers Brown Architecture and LJB Inc., is projected to be operational in mid-2016 and will feature the world’s largest tilt-up concrete building, encompassing 4 million square feet. The structure will incorporate more than 2 miles of panel length, with approximately 370 wall panels. They will account for a large portion of a concrete schedule upwards of 360,000 cubic yards.

One of 34 projects named in the Tilt-Up Concrete Association’s 2014 Achievement Award winners, the Sugar Land, Texas, Veterans Memorial took top honors in the Special Projects category. The memorial consists of an obelisk with five concrete panels, symbolizing the five branches of the military; a flag panel entryway; and, a bridge. Each element was cast on site using casting beds and wood formwork, and were erected in less than three days.
