TRB 2019: Nanotechnology boosts performance of cementitious grouts

Precast concrete products were on the agenda of the 99th annual Transportation Research Board meeting in January in Washington, D.C. Over 12,000 delegates heard presentations in 800-plus sessions addressing multimodal transportation policy and construction practice, including materials and design involving precast/prestressed products. Concrete Products was there and we present this report on new research in precast structures and methods. We will look at TRB 2019 research in cast-in-place concrete later this year. Milwaukee-based Scott Campbell, Ph.D., P.E. is the newest National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Building Promotion team member. As senior vice president of Structures and Codes, he will join colleagues in advancing industry interests through model codes and technical standards, and support state and local advocacy efforts. He will work closely with engineers and architects, code advocates, and legislative specialists to offer technically correct code-related solutions that maintain public safety and increase building resilience. Campbell holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He moves to NRMCA from Portland Cement Association, where he served as director of Code Technology.

Group behind LEED alternative logs record two-year growth

The Green Building Initiative (GBI) has elected its 2019 Board of Directors, led by Stimson Lumber Co. Vice President of Sales and Pacific Northwest Association of Rail Shippers President Tim Atkinson, who succeeds outgoing chairman Rich Mitchell, managing principal architect of Mackenzie. The latter is based in Portland, Ore., along with GBI and Stimson. Atkinson takes the reins following the largest two-year growth period in the group’s history, during which staff and members supported more than 465 building projects that earned third-party assessment and certification through the Green Globes and federal Guiding Principle Compliance (GPC) programs. Atkinson has served on the GBI Board of Directors since 2013 and assumes the chairman’s post after a two-year term as treasurer.
