LafargeHolcim has closed on its second U.S. deal of 2019, acquiring Fort Worth, Texas-based Colorado River Concrete. Founded in 1987, the ready mixed producer serves customers from the southwestern Dallas/Fort Worth area into parts of west Texas. It joins a LafargeHolcim region anchored by Tarrant Concrete in Fort Worth and Lattimore Materials in northern Dallas, plus the Holcim Midlothian cement plant south of the Metroplex.

Jay Moreau has transitioned from Martin Marietta senior vice president of Operations Services to LafargeHolcim U.S. Aggregates and Construction Materials chief executive officer. He will oversee one of the top producers in ready mixed concrete, sand & gravel, crushed stone and asphalt—encompassing Aggregate Industries management and sister operations brought under one umbrella following Lafarge North America and Holcim (US) Inc. parent companies’ 2015 merger.

NRMCA has named David Buoncristiani of Central Concrete Supply Co., San Jose, Calif., the 2019 Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional Driver of the Year. Based at the producer’s South San Francisco plant, he is recognized for career achievements, outstanding safety record, professionalism, driving competency and customer service skills.

Kentucky Crushed Stone Association Executive Director Nick Rodgers, Arkansas Ready Mixed Concrete Association Executive Director Rita Madison and Georgia Construction Aggregate Association Executive Director Jeff Wansley have been elected 2019-2020 Aggregate and Concrete Executives (ACE) chairman, vice chairman and secretary/treasurer, respectively. New urban market ready mixed operations are the theme of a January 21 session, “Concrete Plants of the Future,” at the Las Vegas Convention Center—part of World of Concrete 2019 day one education activities. The two-hour program will spotlight the 400-plus yd./hour National Ready Mixed Concrete Co. Vernon plant on the edge of downtown Los Angeles; and, the 250-yd./hour Superior Concrete Materials District of Columbia plant, built in a transitioning neighborhood of the nation’s capital.

NRMCA President Robert Garbini, P.E. will retire at the close of the association’s annual convention, March 5-7 in Tampa, capping a 27-year career with the group and more than two decades at its helm. He announced his plan indicating confidence that staff and member leadership will continue to achieve goals for advancing concrete’s interests in the building sector, local paving market and advocacy arena, while increasing workforce professionalism and product quality through research and education.

Batch controls and concrete plant automation developer Marcotte Systems has entered a partnership with fleet technology and Internet of Things (IoT) device specialist Coretex, whose 360 solution encompasses a complete set of sensors specifically designed for ready mixed delivery and quality control—drum rotation, water-added measurement and precise integrated statusing among them. The integrated Marcotte and Coretex system is on field trial and scheduled for early-2019 launch.

Results from the NRMCA Workforce Development Committee’s 2018 Mixer Driver Recruitment and Retention Survey confirm an increased pressure on ready mixed producers to maintain a healthy concrete delivery professional pool. The survey indicates that the industry’s driver ranks dropped 3 percent between January and December 2017, while 48 percent of respondents reported lost business because they did not have drivers to deliver orders—up 12 percent from last year’s survey (2016 figures).
