EPA revisits SCM in procurement guidelines; honors CalPortland and Cemex

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has opened a public comment period through July 6 on the Agency’s current list of 61 items that are or can be made from recovered materials in eight Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPG) categories, plus recommendations to federal agencies on purchasing such items. The largest category, Construction Products, includes blended cement or concrete containing fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag and silica fume.

Cemex outlines double-digit CO2 emissions reduction plan through 2030

A new Climate Action strategy positions Cemex to clip net specific carbon dioxide emissions 35 percent across a global cement, concrete and aggregates enterprise against a 1990 baseline level. The producer defined an additional double-digit percent reduction target for the decade ahead on top of a 22-plus percent CO2 emissions cut realized since climate change concerns gained prominence and spotlighted carbon-intensive sectors.

Following a successful pilot of order loading and tracking at the FEC Quarry outside Miami, Cemex USA is rolling out a major extension of its Go mobile technology platform, launched in 2017 for concrete accounts with an eye to digital transformation of the heavy building materials business. Measured against current methods, the Go Quarry Link app enables customers to receive aggregate orders with greater efficiency and provides real-time truck monitoring plus better product visibility and loadout processes.

Cemex, Eagle Materials announce $665M Kosmos Cement asset deal

The latest measure narrowing the Cemex USA portfolio to concrete, aggregate and cement operations in coastal or southern border states will see an asset sale involving Kentucky’s Kosmos Cement Co., seven distribution terminals plus raw material reserves to Dallas-based Eagle Materials Inc. As a 75/25 partner with Buzzi Unicem S.p.A. in Kosmos Cement, whose Louisville flagship has a 1.7-million ton/year capacity, Cemex will realize an estimated $499 million from the transaction.
