XL Specialized Trailers | 140 HDE 13-Axle Trailer

Rated at 140,000 lb. capacity overall, the XL 140 Hydraulic Detachable Extendable (HDE) model can handle large machinery or commercial freight of all sizes. With its low rear deck height of 28 inches, it can haul freight normally seen on a step deck trailer, but with the added efficiency of a hydraulic neck. The 13-axle unit includes a three-axle trailer, three-axle jeep, and three-axle power booster. The XL classic-style hydraulic gooseneck is 13-ft., 8-in. long and includes a 52-in. fifth wheel height with seven ride height positions, as well as a 9-ft., 9-in. flip neck for the three-axle jeep.

The 57-ft., 9-in. long trailer’s main deck is 29-ft. long and opens to 50 ft. 3 in. using XL’s patented Extend-A-Trac technology. With extension stops every 2 feet, it is highly adjustable. The trailer also has a sub-frame disconnect which allows for deck inserts to be added for additional length, or for the main deck to be switched out for a different one if needed. At 102-in. wide and 29-ft. long, the ground clearance is 6 inches for a 26-in. loaded deck height. The width of the main deck can be extended to 10 ft., 6 in. with 12-in. heavy-duty removable swing-out outriggers. It also can be outfitted with 13 bent D-rings and 10 chain drops per side, as well as 31-in. front flip ramps. The deck also features 1-3/8-in. raised apitong decking—a wood stronger than oak—for additional durability.

The 15-ft. long rear deck has a bolster-style wheel area with two bent D-rings on each bolster. Equipped with a battery back up system, strobe lights stay on even when the neck is detached. Both the rear deck and the power booster’s axles go through the trailer frame to achieve a loaded deck height of 28 inches, only 2 inches higher than the main deck, allowing for easy loading over the rear.

The XL 3-Axle Power Booster provides additional flexibility and user control, as it scales an adjustable amount of weight from the rear of the trailer to the axles behind the power booster. The nitrogen gas accumulators not only help to scale the load over the axles more evenly, they also act as shock absorbers and reduce impact on the booster.

Joining the company’s full line of heavy haul trailers equipped with Extend-A-Trac is the XL 80 Flat Deck Extendable (FDE), its patented technology extends and retracts the deck without hooking and unhooking air and electrical lines.

The XL 80 FDE is rated at 80,000 lb. overall and 60,000 lb. concentrated in 10 feet when closed. With an overall width and length of 102 in. and 53 ft., the XL 80 FDE features a 91-ft. open length at full extension. Suited for long commercial loads, the trailer features air operated lock pins with extension stops every 60 inches. Four 6-in. greasable rollers assist the Extend-a-Trac in moving smoothly.

With an ability to haul a variety of loads, the sliding tandem axles adjust using a simple lock pin, which works best with each load’s specific weight distribution. The XL 80 FDE model is available with three axle-spread options: 49 inches (with spring suspension only), 54 inches or 60 inches. The 43-ft. long rear deck features a 58-in. loaded deck height. The trailer’s 10-ft. long front deck features a 24-in. king pin setting with 82-in. swing clearance, two-speed landing gear, a 49-in. fifth wheel height, and four stake pockets across the front channel for an optional department of transportation-rated headboard. — XL Specialized Trailers, Manchester, Iowa, 877/283-4852; www.xlspecializedtrailer.com
