Dailey Precast is preparing to ship 28 girders for the Maine Rt. 103/York River crossing, the first structure to be built with the PCI Northeast Bridge Technical Committee’s NEXT Beam design. The modified double tee is 8- to 12-ft. wide, 24- to 36-in. deep, with 4- (site-cast deck) or 8-in. (integral deck) flange. It is the product of two years’ development by the Bridge Technical Committee, representing precast/prestressed producers, consultants, and transportation officials from six New England states, plus New York.
Committee members see the NEXT Beam well suited for replacement structures with 45- to 90-ft. spans; as an alternative to prestressed concrete adjacent box or bulb tee girders, it offers an open design for utility runs and quick visual inspection. Dailey Precast built a dedicated NEXT Beam bed from four Hamilton Form segments, hosting a three-day, late-February agency and customer open house as York River Bridge fabrication was under way.
