Using fuel type and consumption, along with power generation source data, the new National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association greenhouse gas (GHG) calculator evaluates emissions from aggregate, ready mixed concrete, asphalt, and pulverized mineral operations. It provides a spreadsheet protocol following World Resources Institute and California Climate Action procedures for gas inventories.
The NSSGA Environmental Committee developed the calculator as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approaches a June 2009 deadline for establishing a GHG registry, and state governments become increasingly heavy-handed in their attempts to control emissions of carbon dioxide and other compounds linked to perceived climate change. The spreadsheet tool enables users to determine if their emissions are above future regulatory and Congressional thresholds, while participating in voluntary emissions registries. Data compiled from the protocol will help member companies inform stockholders, public stakeholders and neighboring communities concerning GHG emissions and emission reduction programs, says NSSGA Environmental Committee Chairman Steve Whitt (Martin Marietta Materials).
Additional information on the calculator and user’s guide can be obtained from NSSGA Vice President of Environment, Safety & Health John Hayden, [email protected].
