U.S. Concrete reported Oct. 1 closing on a deal for Middleburg, Pa.-based Architectural Precast LLC, a business strategic to the buyer’s Eastern Concrete Materials ready mixed and aggregate operations in New Jersey and Delaware. A specialist in architectural and structural products and U.S. Concrete’s first such transaction east of the Mississippi, Architectural Precast logged $16.9 million in shipments during the fiscal year ending July 31, 2007.
“The combination of precast with our existing ready-mixed concrete [businesses] will provide our Atlantic Region customers a full range of products and services,” says U.S. Concrete President and CEO Michael Harlan. “We are very pleased to retain the current management team, which has significant experience and expertise to run this operation.”
Concurrently, Doug McLaughlin has been appointed vice president of the newly formed U.S. Concrete Pre-Cast Division. That unit spans Architectural Precast plus Arizona and southern and northern California precast plants U.S. Concrete had operated under Western and Southwest Precast regions. A 24-year veteran of San Diego Precast leading up to its 1999 acquisition by U.S. Concrete, McLaughlin has most recently served as vice president of the Southwest Precast region, encompassing high-growth San Diego and Phoenix properties.
“The precast concrete industry represents significant potential growth, as well as an opportunity to expand our presence into historically higher-margin business lines. Doug McLaughlin’s 32 years of experience in this industry and proven track record make him the ideal person to lead U.S. Concrete’s Pre-Cast Division,” says Harlan.
