Hanson Pipe & Precast’s El Mirage, Ariz., plant was in testing phases last month toward a scheduled early-October grand opening, with festivities to include a donation to Phoenix Children’s Hospital through the Children’s Miracle Network. The first facility of its kind in the Western U.S., the 110,000-sq.-ft. plant is managed by Chris Ortiz and employs approximately 35.
With the new technology of automated systems for pipe production, curing and testing, the plant can produce, on average, 500 tons of product per day, which represents a significant increase in capacity for the company. Pipe is produced on the three-station rotary turntable Hawkeye PipePro XT Machine, which includes modules for creating varying diameters of pipe at the same time.
Hanson has been part of the Arizona building community for more than 40 years, said Richard Manning, president and chief executive officer of Hanson Building Products North America.
Many parts of Arizona are experiencing growing infrastructure needs due to a surge in new residential, commercial and industrial construction. The Phoenix metro area, Flagstaff and Yuma were recently voted by Expansion Management as three of the 50 top cities in the United States for business expansion. Hanson Pipe recently shipped product for storm water drainage systems in Cheatham Farms, a housing development in the Southwest Valley, and for roadway improvement projects such as the expansion of the Santan Freeway.
This new facility will allow us to offer a range of products to our customers all under one roof, said Sue Tanenbaum, president of Hanson’s Western Region, based in Portland, Ore. El Mirage is one of 12 operations in the region, which also has plants in California, Oregon, Utah and Washington.
