Davis-Bacon enforcement nets bridge deck contractor crew $92K

Idaho Falls, Idaho-based JM Concrete Inc. has paid $92,290 in back wages to 27 carpenters, drivers, general laborers and power equipment operators who performed work on the Lorenzo Bridge Rehabilitation, a $1.8 million contract on State Highway 20 in Jefferson and Madison counties. Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division investigators cited Davis-Bacon Act violations when they determined that the contractor failed to pay crew members prevailing wages and fringe benefits and issue paychecks weekly.

Salt River increases blending capacity for performance Class F ash substitute

Salt River Materials Group has built a powder blending facility and expanded loadout capabilities at its Tucscon Terminal, responding to energy market forces hampering consistent supply of high quality fly ash for Arizona concrete customers. Located within the Tucson Electric Power Sundt Generating Station, the new operation blends ash from multiple sources plus a Type N natural pozzolan for a finished powder meeting ASTM C1697, Standard Specification for Blended Supplementary Cementitious Materials requirements. The material is dubbed “Tucson Pozzolan” and expands supply of a performance Class F fly ash substitute.

Michigan deal sustains Groundworks’ national foundation brand pursuit

A Dodge Data & Analytics survey conducted with support from Command Alkon and three other technology partners finds that heavy civil contractors, despite Covid-19 staff and project impacts, are generally optimistic about business conditions through 2021. The sentiments of 99 heavy civil practitioners surveyed from mid-April to mid-May contrast with more cautious views commercial contractors expressed in companion Dodge research.

Commercial Construction Index: Expectations down, backlogs steady

The Q2 2020 USG Corporation + U.S. Chamber of Commerce Commercial Construction Index dropped to 56 from a Q1 level of 74, reflecting lower contractor confidence in three indicators—new business, revenue expectations and project backlog volume—expressed during surveys conducted in April, at the height of shutdown restrictions.
