After a second consecutive year where concrete, cement and aggregate interests saw modest shipment gains—while overall construction industry increases in 2013 reached the 7-8 percent range—producers are positioned to act on plant and fleet equipment investment carrying them through the growth projected for the remainder of the decade. Concrete producers attending ConExpo-Con/Agg 2014, March 4-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, will note compressed natural gas-powered front and rear discharge mixer trucks; new mixer- and dumpready Kenworth and Peterbilt models; mobile device-geared fleet tracking and management technologies; and, new plant offerings ranging from portable roller compacted mix or small capacity, transit mixed models—to name a few of the innovations in store, particularly in the South Hall.

Association of Equipment Manufacturers bills the show as an immense unveiling of all the newest equipment, technology and product breakthroughs for the concrete, aggregate and construction interests. From earthshaking big iron to groundbreaking innovations, it’s all assembled in one place to help attendees work smarter. ConExpo-Con/ Agg 2014 will cover a record-breaking exhibit expanse exceeding 2.3 million net sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor booths, while the co-located IFPE 2014—targeting the fluid power/power transmission/motion control industries—marks a record 165,000 net square feet of exhibit space.

Show management stresses that quality, not size, is the goal. A strategic alignment with needs of the industry has led to programs and events geared toward helping attendees and exhibitors achieve the most value out of their time at the shows. “Attendees will find the newest products and technologies and technical experts ready to discuss product features and applications. In the space of a few days, in one place, visitors can examine and compare the best of what our industries have to offer,” says Megan Tanel, ConExpo-Con/Agg show director and AEM vice president, Exhibitions and Events.

“Attendees will also find the focused industry education, with the latest techniques and information, they need to run their businesses most efficiently. The opportunity to share experiences and ideas with industry peers adds another dimension to the show experience,” adds Melissa Magestro, IFPE show director and AEM senior director, Exhibitions. 

ConExpo-Con/Agg 2014 organizers project: a) 2,400-plus exhibitors showcasing new products and technologies for every major construction segment, including concrete, aggregates, asphalt, earthmoving, lifting, mining, and utilities; b) more than 130,000 attendees that range from contractors, to dealers and distributors, to service providers, engineers, producers municipalities; and, c) a comprehensive education program during the five-day exposition with sessions emphasizing industry issues and trends, management and applied technology.

Among new services and features for this year’s show, AEM officials note a navigation program that will make getting around the show much simpler than past events. Key features: superior shuttle service; enhanced mobile navigation app; knowledgeable onsite guides to help answer any questions; and, new internal routes helping attendees transfer from one product area to another much faster than prior shows.

Respondents in show surveys say key reasons for attending are new products and access to industry experts. Show management notes these reasons propel new attendees as well, and they’ll find both at the 2014 ConExpo-Con/Agg and IFPE, with the leading manufacturers and companies showcasing the latest innovations and technologies.

“The common thread among those making their first trip to ConExpo-Con/Agg and IFPE is an excitement about new products and new technology. The ability to compare products and talk with company experts make the shows a very unique opportunity,” notes John Rozum, attendee acquisition manager specializing in specific outreach to first-timers who represent large contracting or producer companies.

ConExpo-Con/Agg management will host the inaugural Young Leaders Event, a March 5 luncheon assembling up-and-coming industry leaders to share ideas and build relationships for the future. Producers, contractors, fleet managers, distributors and others who are under 40 years old are encouraged to participate; it’s also an opportunity for companies to spotlight their emerging leaders.

“ConExpo-Con/Agg is the perfect place to recognize the excellence of our next generation; it’s where the industry gathers and where the next generation of new technologies is on display,” says Tanel. “Our young leaders can also participate in focused education as well as find the equipment and products that will help them achieve continued success.”

ConExpo-Con/Agg wants to publicly show appreciation to the contractors who have weathered a tough economy and continued to add to our quality of life. The construction industry suffered more than most other economic sectors in the Great Recession and the recovery is still struggling as demonstrated by these figures:

  • Employment fell further and longer in construction (residential plus nonresidential) than in any other sector. Employment declined for nearly five years, by 1.9 million or 25 percent from 7.7 million in April 2006, seasonally adjusted, to 5.4 million in January 2011. By August 2013, the industry had regained fewer than 400,000 jobs.
  • Construction spending totaled $857 billion in 2012, a 9 percent increase from 2011 but 27 percent below the peak year of 2006. Public construction spending totaled $279 billion (down 3 percent from 2011); private nonresidential spending, $298 billion (up 16 percent from 2011); and, private residential, $280 billion (up 16 percent from 2011).

In a nod to contractors’ perseverance, ConExpo-Con/Agg management is recognizing the accomplishments of the construction industry through the Quality of Life Campaign. Up to 50 contractors, many tied to major infrastructure projects over the past few years, will be honored in a March 6 gathering. The campaign is raising greater awareness of the accomplishments of the construction industry among all those who benefit from its work: vital improvements such as well-maintained and safe roads and bridges, upgraded and fully functioning clean-water and sewer capabilities, and improved facilities for recreation, health, transit and other services.

Campaign-generated stories explain the positive benefits of construction projects of all sizes and descriptions across the U.S., and ConExpo-Con/Agg has invited contractors and other industry professionals to submit projects demonstrating how their companies and their projects contribute to our quality of life. Contractors whose projects fit the program will have the opportunity to garner publicity for their work.

Show management has announced a program to honor equipment innovation and product engineering, awards spotlighting exhibitor achievements in the areas of concrete, earthmoving, lifting, roadbuilding, compaction and concrete. The program opened to industry professionals, who could vote online and register for chance to win a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet computer. The inaugural awards will be announced at special ceremonies during the show and displayed online.

AEM will focus on I Make America as well as equipment operator safety awareness and its new EU REACH regulatory compliance initiative. At the association’s booth (#20051) in the Grand Lobby, attendees can sign up for the I Make America campaign and spin a wheel for special prizes. They can also sign a Highway Bill petition for federal lawmakers approaching a September 30 expiration of the current funding program. At the “EU REACH Regulatory Intelligence” module in the IFPE booth (#80018) in the South Hall, upper level, visitors can find out more about European Union regulations that affect manufacturers and the entire supply chain—along with AEM’s new cost-effective program to help manufacturers and suppliers more easily comply with these complex and far-reaching rules.

REACH is the European Union directive for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances. The European Parliament has called REACH “… one of the most complex texts in the history of the EU.” Key to the AEM program is a monthly EU REACH bulletin and a training module designed to help companies that export machinery to Europe comply with REACH’s complex and ever-changing regulations, so they can maintain market access and reduce risk.

The monthly EU REACH Executive Brief, produced by AEM and Compliance & Risks, is customized specifically for the off-road equipment manufacturing industry and contains news of what has changed and is scheduled to change, upcoming deadlines and analysis from industry experts, as well as case studies and feature articles from peer companies.

AEM will round out member services with an Industry Investor Conference to spotlight member company capabilities and the industry’s scope to analysts who recommend, buy or upgrade public offerings. The invitation-only meeting provides a convenient industry-wide setting for members to discuss the benefits of investing in the construction machinery industry as well as individual company interests and prospects.

Following up on an inaugural competition (below) during the 2011 ConExpo-Con/Agg, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association will stage the 2014 International Mixer Driver Championship March 5 in the Las Vegas Convention Center Blue Lot.

A challenge course, where participants choose rear or front discharge vehicles, will be modeled after the one anchoring the annual National Mixer Truck Driver Championship NRMCA stages will its fall ConcreteWorks Conference and Expo.

This year’s International Championship is open to the winners of the 2011, 2012 and 2013 National events; “at-large” participants representing domestic producers; and, up to 25 drivers outside the U.S. 


Expanding options for mixer and dump truck operators, along with other vocational market customers, the company has added Meritor EX+ Air Disc Brakes to Granite and Titan model specs.

“[The] air disc brakes are built to our standards and tuned specifically for the needs of vocational customers to help boost uptime and lower overall lifecycle costs,” said Stu Russoli, Mack vocational marketing product manager. “Vehicle operators and workers on the job site can also enjoy the added safety benefits of the air disc brakes’ exceptional stopping performance.” “Our air disc brakes are optimized to give customers a durable option for excellent performance in any type of work environment,” adds Mack Vice President of Marketing John Walsh.

More than 2.2 million miles of real-world service in North America has shown that the air disc brakes deliver superior stopping performance and require less maintenance than conventional S-cam designs, Mack engineers contend. The brakes utilize a flat rotor concept to prevent heat distortion in heavy-duty service, rather than “hat-shaped” rotors, which are prone to distortion and shorter life; pads are engineered to deliver top performance in all situations and minimize equipment fade during extreme braking cycles and frequent use.

Mack announced the air disc brake option (drive axle, left; steer axle, right) at World of Concrete 2014. The brakes were shown on a Granite-mounted Beck Industrial mixer whose graphics were easily best of show. Texas-based Beck Industrial offers mixer trucks with 8- to 12-yd. TMMB-rated capacity drums, along with ready mixed plant equipment.

BASF Construction Chemicals’ Admixture Systems business arrives at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2014 on the heels of two major announcements during World of Concrete: the Master Builders Solutions branding rollout in North America and MasterLife CRA 007, a unique crack-reducing admixture.

Using an alcohol compound developed under the BASF Corp. umbrella—applied for the first time to a portland cement environment—MasterLife CRA 007 enhances concrete aesthetics and long-term durability by reducing the likelihood cracking will occur and, if it does, minimizes crack width. The compound is dosed at 1–2 gal./yd.; yields an alcohol-like aroma in freshly placed mixes; and, can work synergistically with synthetic fibers, which hold cracks tight when the form, to efficiency control crack widths.

The patent-pending technology is a special class of shrinkage-reducing admixture that produces a maximum initial crack width of 175μm (.007 inches) in high-performance, crack-prone mixtures tested in accordance with ASTM C1581, Standard Test Method for Determining Age at Cracking and Induced Tensile Stress Characteristics of Mortar and Concrete under Restrained Shrinkage. The minimized crack width is nearly invisible to the naked eye. Crack widths up to .007 inches do not transport water and have the potential to self-heal over time, thus increasing concrete durability by minimizing ingress of chlorides, sulfates, and other potentially harmful materials. MasterLife CRA 007 performs in air-entrained mixes, and is especially suited to bridge decks, jointless floors, slabs on grade and liquid-bearing structures.

“Cracking is a major issue for the industry, as it detracts from the aesthetics of concrete, can be a safety hazard, and may compromise durability or structural integrity,” says BASF Admixture Systems Vice President Juan Alfonso Garcia. “MasterLife CRA 007 admixture is a breakthrough technology that minimizes cracking and improves concrete quality.”

“Many of today’s concrete specifications are embracing performance-based solutions,” adds Manager, Engineering Services Dr. Charles Nmai. “BASF is committed to developing products like MasterLife CRA 007 that improve concrete performance through enhanced durability, extending the service life of structures and minimizing cost and environmental impact.”

MasterLife CRA 007 admixture will meet ASTM C494, Standard Specification for Chemical Admixtures for Concrete, Type S, Specific Performance Admixtures, and joins the Master Builders Solutions construction product portfolio. In addition to concrete admixtures, the portfolio spans cement additives, chemical solutions for mining and tunneling, sealants, waterproofing, concrete protection and repair products, and grouts. —

In the ASTM C1581 procedure, BASF Admixture Systems notes, fresh mortar or concrete samples are compacted in a circular mold around an instrumented steel ring. Indicated in compressive strain developed in the ring, the sample’s restrained shrinkage is measured from the time of casting. Specimen cracking is indicated by sudden ring strain decrease. The age at cracking and rate of tensile stress development in the sample reflect material’s potential to resist cracking under restrained shrinkage.

Company has developed the Command Center touchscreen electronic for its full line-up of mixer trucks, including the Bridgemaster and Standard models. Engineered specifically for ready mixed vehicle applications, the controls feature a series of easy-to-navigate touchscreen controls (with intuitive graphic icons); an operator-friendly joystick likewise available. The driver is able to control all aspects of drum charging and discharging, drum rotation, chute control options, and Bridgemaster controls. The system integrates built-in interlocks that will not allow the mixer system to operate outside predetermined parameters. With reduced wiring and integrated self-diagnostics, reliability is enhanced, maintenance simplified.

London speeds device-appropriate content delivery London Machinery Inc. has launched an all-new, user-friendly website at, equipped for responsive web design through a powerful content management system that automatically optimizes its content to fit any desktop computer.

A dropdown menu enables visitors to view any page on the site with a single click. Manufacturer has recently extended the McNeilus Next Generation Initiatives (NGEN) compressed natural gas fueling system for rear discharge mixer trucks to namesake S-Series front discharge models. Since 2006, McNeilus and the Oshkosh Commercial business segment have been engineering, testing, and installing CNG power on a wide range of vehicles, including mixers and Class 8 over-the road-trucks.

Among early front discharge mixer fleet operators adopting CNG is Fairless Hills, Pa.-based Silvi Group Companies, which has ordered 30 S-Series NGEN models. Its inaugural truck was

shown at World of Concrete in January, prior to delivery to eastern Pennsylvania. “This is our first purchase of CNG powered mixer trucks. The price difference between CNG and diesel fuel is significant, and these trucks will provide a strong return on our investment,” says Silvi Group Senior Vice President Tim Kurz. “Before making this purchase, we evaluated two other manufacturers and we believe the S-Series is the best front discharge CNG mixer configuration available. 

Silvi Companies’ NGEN order, notes Oshkosh Commercial Business Segment President Brad Nelson, is a testament to “the expertise we’ve gained through installing CNG on more than 8,000 severe duty trucks. Silvi Companies are leaders and innovators, with a strong commitment to environmental protection, and we applaud this important migration to the McNeilus NGEN system.”

“Anything we can do to reduce our carbon footprint [and] noise pollution, and help the environment—which these trucks will do—we’re in favor of,” adds Kurz. “It is also paramount to

have excellent equipment, like the S-Series, to attract and retain outstanding employees.” The McNeilus NGEN CNG system is designed for the rugged ready mixed concrete environment. The plumbing system is built with CNCformed high-pressure lines, compression fittings, and fewer connection points to deliver more consistent and reliable fuel flow. Lightweight, natural gas vehicle Type 4 tanks and long-lasting fuel storage pods feature all-aluminum covers. The fuel control module is designed for either fast- or time-filling to fit customer preferences. The system also features easy access to tanks for quick inspection. Thermal pressure relief devices provide continuous full tank length protection on all standard configurations.

New to the Continental line 2014 is a front discharge model, available with the Cummins ISX12 diesel in 350-, 385- and 425-hp ratings, plus optional Jacobs engine brake system.

The Continental FDM series is available in the full complement of wheelbases and chassis configurations to meet the demands of every market and state DOT requirement. Numerous chassis component and mixer feature options are also available to allow ready mixed producers to tailor the vehicle to their specs. A new cab offers a spacious work environment, automotive dashboard, and driver-friendly controls. — 713/948-2600;

Front discharge model boasts significant steering and front suspension improvements over prior offerings, enabling drivers to take advantage of the front axle’s full wheel cut capability, while significantly reducing the turn radius. Curb-to-curb turn radius is now a maximum of 68 feet, a 15 percent reduction from previous models, to improve on-site maneuverability.

At the same time, the wheel base on the FD4000 mixer truck has increased by 12 percent to 208 inches for improved weight distribution, ride quality and operator comfort. More than 20 upgrades have been made to the operator’s cab of the FD4000 mixer truck, highlighted by 8.5 inches of additional floor space, making it more comfortable for taller operators. Its redesigned dashboard features logical positioning of gauges for improved operating efficiency, while brighter LED dome lights with door entry switch makes it easier to enter/exit the cab. Rear vents and louvers help to improve inside cab heating and make it easier to close the door. Accessing the cab is now easier, thanks to the stair rail handle and flexible hanging third step. 

Customers can choose between two 2013 EPA-compliant engines, offering the latest in emissions control technology. The MTU DD13 diesel engine can be configured to provide 350-, 380- or 450-hp to meet application needs. Alternatively, customers can opt for the Cummins ISX12 engine, offering three different power ratings of 350-, 385- or 425-hp. In the summer of 2014, customers will also have a 400-hp compressed natural gas (CNG) engine option. A standard on-board diagnostic (OBD) system provides self-diagnostics of emission system components and reports through a CAN-bus connection to help operators monitor the working condition of all EPA-required components.

The standardized 11-yd. mixer drum on the FD4000 truck excels in transporting and discharging low-slump concrete. Its drum shell is constructed with AR400 steel, and 0.25-in. thick AR230 steel fins

and flights in the mixing area improve wear resistance. Bolt-on trunnion rollers provide easier adjustment and simplified servicing. To improve truck service-life longevity and reduce corrosion, components are pre-primed and powder coated. The mixer truck’s air system features more than a hundred part-count reduction from previous models, resulting in fewer connections for less air leakage potential. The lift axle is controlled by a single module (LACM), which replaces four valves per axle, improving system-servicing ease. Wiring harnesses are efficiently routed to improve electrical system reliability, while stop/turn/tail, back-up and license plate lights use LED lighting for longer life. 

To simplify the mixer truck ordering process, Terex now offers three trim-line equipment packages for the FD4000 model to meet the customer’s needs and budget level: the Work Truck Standard Package, Performance Plus Package and Premium Package. An optional cold-weather package is available for all three trim-lines and includes heated mirrors, heated water valve and 110V block heater.


Tutor Perini Ft. Lauderdale–Hollywood Venture crews stretched a Terex Bid-Well 4800 paver to its limits late last year while paving Taxiway Cell 3 at the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport. One of 33 complex concrete pours they tackled called for deploying the machine at a 45-degree skew, perpendicular to the beams, which required the length to be set at 186-ft. (56.7-m) wide. The 970-yd. pour netted a portion of taxiway. 

“Had the machine been able to pave at the square, it would have been set to pave at 110-ft. wide,” says Terex Bid-Well Regional Sales Manager Larry Eben. “The 186-ft. paver configuration is a record width for me and quite possibly for any bridge deck placed.” The 4800 paver features a standard 48-in. (122-cm) frame depth. When paving at extended widths beyond 150-ft. (45.7-m) wide, the paver starts with standard truss frame segments at both ends of the paver. Transition inserts are then used to increase the frame’s depth to 66 inches (167 cm) in the center, improving frame rigidity and preventing deflection to maintain surface smoothness. The frame is constructed of ultrahigh-strength steel nearly 120 percent stronger, yet weighing less than steel in conventional Terex Bid-Well pavers.

Additionally when paving at these extended widths, the 4800 paver is constructed with strong gussets, made of the same ultrahigh-strength steel, to connect the truss sections. The 1.5-in. (2.8-cm) crown bolts used in these connections are also larger than those used with standard 4800 paver configurations. The stronger leg mounting system consists of larger lift screws and heavier thrust bearings, mounting plate and coupler motor, all working in concert to help ensure more reliable operation at the project site.


Four exhibit areas totaling about 60,000 square feet—among the largest total display spaces this year—will showcase 40-plus machines, most with integrated technologies that help equipment operators, managers and owners maximize operation throughout the life cycle. The displays also present a variety of work tools, U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final engines, components and service parts, all designed and manufactured to optimize machine performance.

Among more than a dozen units debuting at ConExpo-Con/Agg are the M Series medium wheel loaders, represented by the 982M and 972M XE. The latter features advanced powertrain technology, first shown on the 966K XE, resulting in 25 percent lower fuel consumption on average compared to machines with traditional torque converters. The 982M delivers the capability to load highway trucks in two passes. Along with the 972M, it is part of a phased 2014 rollout of Tier 4 Final-compliant M series loaders, culminating in the starter model, the 950, scheduled for fourth quarter production. 

In Caterpillar’s anchor North Hall booth, displays will focus on Cat Connect, which brings together Cat technology products and services in integrated and scalable forms; and, recently introduced Cat D Series Skid Steer Loaders, Compact Track Loaders and Multi Terrain Loaders. The compact machines feature a completely redesigned cab, new lift arm design for improved sight lines, and increased engine performance. 

Two Gold Lot exhibits will feature 15 site prep machines plus the Cat Merchandise Center, Cat Rental and the Cat dealer area, and Caterpillar OEM Solutions. In the South Hall, Caterpillar Product Support will present a wide array of components, parts and services available to keep machines running efficiently.

The 38Z-Meter Truck-Mounted Concrete Boom Pump features a new boom arm and pedestal design, affording increased maneuverability, reduced overall weight, and a more user-friendly design. While the predecessor model had a four-section boom arm, the new five-section boom arm offers a reduced unfolding height—5 feet lower to 24 feet, enabling operation in more confined spaces. The reach of the boom arm is 108 feet horizontal, 123 feet vertical. With a gross vehicle weight under 54,600 lb., the new pump weighs 2,100 lb. less than the previous 38Z model, allowing for an increased payload capacity for job site equipment, water and fuel.

Along with the increased 38Z boom size is a more robust pedestal, whose sub-frame features bolted connections—allowing for greater flexibility. By adjusting to torsion from the force of the pump, the life of the equipment is increased, while the chance for downtime reduced. Additionally, the pedestal now has a rotation bearing instead of a rack and pinion, which has helped with the machine’s overall weight reduction and allows for easier access to the turret pipe. The 38Z’s new hydraulic system has an improved filtration system, uses less oil, and has fewer parts than the previous system.

It also produces cleaner oil, which improves pump functioning and reduces maintenance intervals. Another significant change in the design of the new 38Z pump is an improved pipe layout and an increased parts commonality between components of the pipe system. In the resulting design, only three types of elbows are used, versus seven elbows in the predecessor. The pump’s new Ergonic Graphic Display, which features wireless computer technology and a high resolution, color screen, also contributes to the pump’s enhanced usability. This main control system allows the operator to set parameters that control the boom, pump, and a variety of other functions, ultimately increasing the convenience, performance and overall
ease-of-use of the machine.

A new line of rolled steel motors, rated to 25 hp, features high efficiency (EPAct) and NEMA Premium models and NEMA 56 to 254/6T frame sizes. All motors in this new line can be specified as foot mount, C-face or footless configuration with TEFC and ODP enclosure as standard and TEAO and TENV as options.

The new rolled steel motor line has a completely new ventilation system for improved thermal performance and longer service life. New robust features include a new foot design as well as new and more robust frame eyebolts. On frames 182/4T and up, there is a single eyebolt and on frames 213/5T and 254/6T a second eyebolt is located on the non-drive end allowing vertical lifting. New electrical benefits include compatibility for variable frequency drive operation, along with an oversized, diagonally split aluminum terminal box which exceeds IP55 requirements. The terminal box also rotates, in 90-degree increments, for more flexibility during installation. The new rolled steel motor can perform well in severe environments since the entire line is designed with IP55 protection, 500-hour salt spray resistant paint, and bearing caps on flanged models.

Optional features available include IP56 ingress protection, F-2 and F-3 mounts, double sealed ball bearings and re-greasable bearings on frame sizes 182/4T and 213/5T. For added thermal protection, thermostats and thermistors are also available.

Company custom designs concrete batch plants for vertical, low-profile or gravity installations, with reversing drum or twinshaft mixers; automatic monitoring; seismic provisions depending on zone; small footprint configurations; and, all seasons output. The 201ADMIX is a weight-based admixture dispensing system for ready mixed and manufactured-concrete plants, offering what company engineers contend are distinct advantages over flow meter systems—among them high degree of accuracy, static and dynamic trim, plus absence of zero and overfill probes. Users can calibrate the scale by their choice of weight or fluid ounces, while the device’s static and dynamic trim help provide highly-accurate valve discharge cut-offs for increased accuracy.

The domestically-made 201ADMIX allows accurate fluid dispensing by weight, pulse, or independent mode (controller directs the device on how much material to fill); includes controller with LCD, polycarbonate box with clear-smoke cover, relays and scale (bottle-mounting bracket and load cell); and, is available with 50-, 100- or 200-lb. load cell capacities. By using a weight-based versus flow meter system, Cardinal engineers note, none of the measurement components come into contact with any caustic chemicals, so they don’t require routine maintenance.

An SD memory card may be used to record all of the weights or pulses in the 201ADMIX, which provides historical data so a supplier can tell how much admixture has been used and when it is time to replenish. The device provides a bold, highly-visible 0.5-in.-high LCD readout of the amount of fluids dispensed for a quick visual verification of weight status. Multiple dispenser systems installed side by side can each have their own unique color-coded LCD, since the 201ADMIX features seven different LCD colors (easily configured in Set-up).

The 201ADMIX features a remote display port, so the LCD may be mounted in a cabinet up to 30 feet from the transmitter and connected via an optional RS232 cable. Four programmable digital outputs are included for easy connectivity with a computer, PLC, or other smart device. Three output relays are typically configured as Pulses (based on the weight requirement), Zero and Overfill (to shut down tank operations). — Cardinal Scale Mfg., 800/441-4237;

Construction software provider’s equipment management line includes features for preventive maintenance plus vehicle or machine tracking. The package works seamlessly with the company’s cloud-based Spectrum Construction Software, requiring no software download or specific hardware devices. The latest equipment management offering updates feature an app that can be downloaded for use on Apple and Android mobile devices. It allows field staff to easily enter equipment information from the job site and synchronizes automatically with Spectrum Equipment Management.

Morse Raider Plus speed reducers utilize advanced finishing techniques, additional bearings and special seals to arm them for leak-free performance. Suited to conveyors and mixers, the Raider Plus’ computerized gear centering optimizes the gear mesh for reduced heat and debris formation, eliminating unnecessary backlash and delivering high efficiency and long life. A patented roll-burnished journal finish extends seal life up to fourfold, and exclusive double-lip seals on both input and output shafts provide leak-proof operation in highly contaminated applications.

The Raider Plus also features an exclusive non-metallic quill liner that reduces fretting and corrosion, and eases motor removal. Large, single-row ball bearings absorb radialand thrust loads on higher input speeds, while heavy-duty tapered roller bearings on all output shafts handle inherent gear load and provide maximum overhung load capacity. Four unit models – the “U”: a universal style with an output shaft, the “Q”: a c-facestyle with an output shaft, and both styles with hollow outputs – are available from stock with a center distance range of 1.0- to 6.0-in., ratios from 4:1 to 3600:1 and output torques from 82 to 22,416 ft.-lb.

All Raider Plus housings, motor adaptors, covers and mounting bases have cast iron single-piece construction for maximum strength and dependability. Forged bronze worm gears, precision manufactured to AGMA specifications, provide greater tensile strength than cast bronze. The integral worm and shaft are hardened to 58RC for extra strength and durability. The speed reducers are all factory-filled with FDA-approved polyglycol synthetic lubricant for enhanced rating and reduced thermal rise.

Starting with applications for Electronic Ticketing, Commerce, and Sales Automation, MOBILEconnect applications will allow producers to extend their desktop computing functions to mobile devices. With this “no boundaries” type of computing, producers will streamline their delivery and customer interaction processes, keep their sales team connected and in the field, and enable their own customers with “anytime access” to account information and the ability to submit requests.

Command Alkon also continues to focus on how to improve the concrete production process. A new Precision Temperature System allows ready-mixed producers to measure ingredient temperatures and adjust water temperatures during the batching process, thus improving the quality of the final product and reducing energy costs at the same time.

The Talon HVX Series Portable Vehicle Scale is constructed with multiple 10-in. and 12-in. structural steel I-beams; coupled with the highest deflection rating on the market, they produce an extremely rigid and durable portable weighbridge.

Also on display in Las Vegas will be the company’s FB2550 Driver Assist Terminal, designed to speed the vehicle-weighing process and reduce associated operating costs. By allowing drivers to remain inside their vehicles, it eliminates safety concerns and liabilities due to drivers walking across scale platforms and traffic lanes. Additionally, show attendees will be able to view the 1605T Series Remote Display, and to watch and discuss with experts how it operates. Fairbanks’ high-intensity LED remote display with integrated traffic light is designed to save users time, space, and money by combining traffic control and display functions in a single device. The technology is also available as a wireless configuration. The all-in-one design with the added benefit of wireless technology eliminates the need for expensive cable and conduit installation.

The V3R telematics platform provides powerful tracking capabilities combined with operating information for trucks and construction equipment operating in harsh conditions including dirt, mud, ice, sand, and rain. It features a durable hard casing designed to withstand the harsh shaking and shocking inherent with rough terrains. The GPS device meets the IP67 and IP69K ratings, making it dust
tight and able to withstand high-pressure and steam cleaning. The sealed water tight connectors ensure reliable connectivity with the vehicle under all weather conditions. This rugged device can endure temperature extremes and will function properly in environments
up to 95 percent humidity.

“Our [construction] customers requested a ruggedized version of the V3 device to help track work equipment, so we responded with the V3R,” says Zonar Chief Marketing Officer Chris Oliver. “The dynamic telematics platform collects data from a variety of sources to provide managers the information needed to effectively manage their fleets. In addition to GPS and vehicle data, the V3R captures data flowing through its input ports for added operational visibility.” The new device brings 3G network GPS tracking to vehicles operating in the harshest conditions. Reports and alerts for asset location, speed, idle time and geo-fences help fleet managers monitor daily activities. The automatic hour meter, based on ignition status, helps track the need for preventive maintenance and provides data for billable hours—saving fleet managers valuable time. The V3R is also compatible with Zonarʼs electronic vehicle inspection reporting system for automated visual truck and equipment inspection reporting. Any asset with power and ground can take advantage of the V3R. With flexible options for magnetic attachment or bolt installation, the V3R is useful for all equipment.

The V3R integrates with all Zonar devices and transmits data from other modules and products, including electronic inspection data captured with the 2020 tablet and 2010 inspection tool. It also contains ports for up to 5 inputs, which can be used to capture events and ensure drivers are following best practices, for example by wearing a seatbelt while the vehicle is in motion.

An innovative stringless control system for use with Wirtgen SP 15 concrete slipform pavers, the AutoPilot suits cast-in-place concrete profiles such as curbs, safety barriers or slabs. The GPS-enabled system ensures the highest precision and optimum efficiency in slipform paving, company engineers note, regardless of whether straight profiles or highly complex curved paths are being placed.

The AutoPilot control gives construction companies a distinct competitive edge, as it bypasses the need to establish a digital terrain model. That’s because programming is completed by using a rover pole to capture coordinates or by simply using the jobsite plans—hence, a surveyor is not required. The system utilizes a computer integrated in the machine, as well as a control panel that allows intuitive operation. For course control, two machine-mounted GPS receivers communicate with an additional GPS reference station positioned on-site. For precise grade control, a laser, ultrasonic sensor, or total station is used. The Wirtgen SP 15 concrete slipform paver has a maximum 6-ft. paving width, top barrier/parapet placement height of 4 ft., 3 in., and weighs 28,500 lb.

Company will launch new material handling, conveying and processing innovations between Central Hall and Silver Lot booths, highlighting its full conveyor component line at both. Sales and engineering teams will be on-hand to discuss how the systems and components boost productivity and efficiency.

As a low cost alternative to traditional custom-engineered overland models, the Zipline Conveyor is designed for quick installation. Pre-engineered and available immediately on demand from dealers, it is a complete package with the structure plus accessories kit that includes idlers, pulleys and Exterra Primary Belt Cleaner. The company will also highlight its 36-in. x 150-ft. TeleStacker Conveyor with new XTP Axle. Rated for 1,000-ton/hour capacities, the model has long been applicable in aggregate stockpiling applications; at ConExpo-Con/Agg, it will be equipped with a 20-ft. telescoping discharge chute suited for loading marine vessels. Its marine-duty covers include belt covers on the main frame and a telescoping canvas cover on the stinger conveyor. The XTP Axle cuts setup time to less than two minutes, while new power travel capability eliminates time-consuming chain installation. The XTP’s pivoting walking beam results in true tire alignment with a radial travel path that eliminates any tire scuffing yet maintaining conveyor feed point to prevent potential spillage.

The RazerTail Truck Unloader features a 48-in. belt, adjustable height discharge conveyor, and wireless remote control operation. At capacities averaging 1,000 tons/hour and rated for 1.5-in.-minus lumps, it offers 60-second belly and end-dump truck cycle times; minimizes costly loader use, increases jobsite safety; and, guarantees product quality by eliminating extra handling of materials. Requiring only a five-minute setup time, its onboard, self-cleaning truck ramps eliminate the need for earthen alternatives.

Equipment line features models complying with all OSHA and ASME B30.5 standards for mobile cranes, and engines that conform to current EPA emissions standards. The outrigger-equipped “spider” mini-cranes can fit through doorways for indoor use, can reach as high as 68-feet, have rated capacities up to 4.2 tons, and specialize in limited access and tight work space lifting.

Three models of the MC series will be show at ConExpo-Con/Agg, including units with dual power (diesel / electric & gasoline / LPG). A new optional auxiliary winch will be introduced with high rope capacity allowing for work from rooftops as far as 330’ below the machine. Other options showcased will be jib style searcher hook boom extensions, a fixed mounted man basket, fly jib attachments, and a remote controlled manipulator vacuum device for placement of glass, steel plate, or smooth stone. All MC models will display wireless radio remote control, moment limiter safety systems with load indicator, heavy duty black or non-marking white rubber tracks, three-sheave hook blocks and other features. The company will also display the LC785M-8, a 5.4-ton capacity telescoping boom crawler; its outrigger-free design offers a 67-ft. maximum tip height and near zero tail swing.

Remote-monitoring security cameras incorporate solar technology with cellular communication, enabling customers to monitor remote sites or yards anywhere cellular service is available without the costly expense of trying to provide those areas power and an Internet connection. Eye Trax’s cellular-based camera is indefinitely powered by a solar panel, triggered by motion, night-vision capabilities, and controlled by a webbased user interface or mobile phone app. These features, along with those typical of a time-lapse video camera, are incorporated into the design.

Eye Trax’s solar-powered wireless motion activated camera system utilizes an integrated passive infrared sensor that measure changes in thermal activity in the camera viewing area. A passive
infrared sensor (PIR) creates an invisible thermal grid in front of the construction camera viewing area. Once this thermal grid is disturbed with an introduction of a new thermal profile, the camera will trigger and in less than half of a second and start taking pictures.

All events captured by the motion-activated camera are time and location stamped and then immediately sent over the secure cellular network to the Eye Trax cloud-based servers. The camera system offers an option to receive event notifications, 24/7, on any mobile phone via SMS message or email. The Eye Trax camera is powered by a very small, lightweight solar panel (a 14-in. square)—it only requires 12V in order to operate.

An internal battery, located inside the aluminum housing of the system, will allow the camera to operate for a full five days in the event of inclement weather.
The camera is optimized to provide a 90-degree field of view and is designed with two lenses: One for daytime color pictures and the other for black and white nighttime pictures. The camera lenses are
surrounded by 55 infrared lamps that will illuminate an area up to 75 feet away from the camera face. The unit can operate in a temperature range of -10°F to 140°F. The
mounting bracket for the Eye Trax unit is fully orbital and can be attached to any surface. The operator can choose from using zip ties to stainless steel screws to
mount the unit. The patent-pending Barrel Mounting Pole will be on display for the first time at ConExpo-Con/Agg the option suiting operators requiring quick installation

Company has recently released more than 50 Endurance air filter sizes for off-road applications. Manufactured using advanced Ultra-Web nanofiber technology, these air filters suit rolling stock as they help reduce maintenance costs and increase equipment uptime.

Donaldson Endurance air filters protect engines and help them last longer by providing better initial and overall efficiency compared to conventional cellulose media. Off-road equipment operators will experience the following advatages:

  • Ultra-long filter life. With the use of Ultra-Web nanofiber technology, submicron contaminants load on the surface of the filter media instead of dispersing throughout the depth of the filter where there is less area for air to flow. After a limited production following Mid America Trucking Show rollout in March 2013, the company recently announced full production for its new mixer- and dump-ready flagship. Debuting with set-back axle, the Model 567 can be ordered in 115- and 121-in. BBC lengths with a wide variety of heavy-duty components and axle configurations for increased payloads and optimized weight distribution. A Paccar MX-13 engine, with up to 500 hp and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque, is standard.

An all-aluminum cab is enhanced with strategically positioned steel reinforcements. Durability is further improved with the Model 567’s highly resilient Metton hood, engineered to absorb many impacts that would shatter or crack other materials. The vehicle also features the signature Peterbilt stainless steel oval mesh grille and surround. The hood pivot system has a protection function that directs energy around the cooling module in the event of an impact.

The Model 567 chassis is designed to maximize strength while minimizing weight for increased payload capacity. It exhibits 10 to 15 percent greater stiffness than comparable models for improved
maneuverability, ride and handling, Peterbilt engineers note, while clean frame rails facilitate ease of body, auxiliary axle and hydraulic tank installation.

Panoramic visibility, ergonomics and operator amenities combine to improve driver productivity and safety. Maximum forward visibility is achieved through a windshield that features integrated locaters in the cab structure to allow for effective, time-efficient field repairs. A-pillars have strategically placed supports for added strength, allowing them to be 13 percent narrower than other designs, further enhancing visibility. The new interior begins with a spacious 2.1
meter-wide cab, whose quiet environment reduces driver fatigue.

The company has announced a namesake concrete placing equipment line for the North American market, starting with the new truck-mounted 37 R4 XXT model, first shown at World of Concrete 2014. The four-section, roll-fold distributor boom has a 37-m (121 ft., 5 in.) reach, its high torsional resistance ensuring reduced vibrations when maneuvering on job sites. Well-balanced weight distribution is achieved by channeling the concrete line extremely close to the boom on both left and right sides. Pressure loss is reduced over the entire distributor boom length due to the generous 10.8-in. (275 mm) pipe bend radius. The bends are predominantly of the same type, minimizing the need to stock diverse replacement parts. Numerous design-related features optimize servicing tasks by simplifying wearpart replacement.

The model also features a Liebherr-patented XXT-narrow outrigger, whose front and rear support arms are secured directly to the distributor boom pedestal, through which forces are channeled into the supports—completely bypassing the boom. The 37 R4 XXT can be equipped with high-performance pump units featuring three different outputs ranging from 163–213 yd./hour (125–163 m³/hour). Chassis from various manufacturers can be used for the truck-mounted concrete pump in accordance with customer requirements. A wide range of optional storage, fuel and related accessories and equipment are available.

Also introduced earlier this year is the L 556, part of the Liebherr family of large-size range of wheel loaders running Tier 4i-compliant power. The new-generation machines have an optimized tipping load that further improves productivity and stability.

The L 556 with Z-bar linkage for standard operations achieves a tipping load of 29,870 lb. at a 39,460-lb. operating weight. The machine is equipped with a 4.7-yd. bucket and driven by a 188-hp Liebherr four-cylinder diesel engine. The L 556 engine compartment has been redesigned for transverse installation, a unique configuration in this loader size class. The design gives the machine a compact layout, and makes all of the principal maintenance points accessible from ground level. A panoramic windshield affords high visibility.

For the Tier 4i power generation, the company continues to use a hydrostatic drive concept with the Liebherr Power Efficiency, an electronic control system that increases the machine’s handling power and minimizes fuel consumption. The new-generation diesel engines are more environmentally friendly than prior models and sport such improvements as precision common-rail fuel injection, which optimizes the combustion process and reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

Exhaust emission control is by means of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter combined with a diesel particulate filter. DPF can be actively regenerated by burning off deposits during machine operation under most conditions—work continuing without interruption.

In advance of EPA Tier 4 final power offerings in late 2014, the DL200-3 with Tier 4 interim-compliant engine package anchors the company’s batch plant-grade loader offering. The 2.6-cu.-yd. model has been relaunched as a 160-hp wheel loader sporting performance improvements that enhance its capabilities for moving materials. The DL200-3 is engineered with a breakout force of 22,230 lb., a full-turn tipping capacity of 17,110 lb., and a dump height of 9 ft. 6 in. For operations requiring additional dumping capabilities, the DL200-3 is also available in a high-lift configuration, extending the dump height 15 inches above the standard DL250, to 10 ft. 9 in. The loader is equipped with a 6-cylinder diesel engine optimized for use with a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system, a diesel oxidation catalyst and a diesel particulate filter. Engines with this configuration are optimized to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOX) and after-treatment is needed to reduce particulate matter, to comply with iT4 emission regulations. The turbocharged engines feature a high-pressure common-rail design with direct fuel injection, electronic control and four valves per cylinder.

This wheel loader’s new auto-idle feature provides additional noise reduction and fuel savings by reducing the working idle of the wheel loader from 950 rpm to a standby idle setting of 750 rpm when the machine is inactive for a short period of time.  Designed with improved lifting performance, the DL200-3 offers operators the ability to set upper and lower limits for both the lift arm and bucket stop positions from inside the cab. Better lifting capabilities improve cycle times in digging and loading applications, while providing better control of the lift arm and bucket positions. An optional fourth spool control valve provides operators the capability to utilize an attachment that requires an additional hydraulic function.

To keep the wheel loader running at optimal performance in dirty and dusty conditions, the DL200-3 incorporates a new automatic-reversing cooling fan. The operator can select to reverse the fan via a switch, or it can be set to automatically reverse on a preset time frame. Each time the fan reverses, it will run in reverse for a few minutes to clean the cooling system. This results in longer working hours and shorter maintenance time to clean the cooling system.

Operators can also expect upgraded driving performance options. As an alternative to the standard limited slip differential, the DL200-3 offers an optional hydraulic locking front differential. Based on ground conditions, the operator can choose to lock the differential manually with a floor-mounted foot switch, or allow the machine to automatically engage the system. This provides increased driving power when one wheel spins or loses traction and improves machine performance when navigating tough terrain.

The 360-cu.-in. engine increases the efficiency of fuel delivery via increased pressure. The increased pressure allows the injector to inject a finer mist into the engine, which results in a more efficient combustion that in turn produces more torque and improved fuel economy, less noise, lower operating costs and cleaner exhaust. Service intervals on the front lift arm pins have increased fivefold, from 50 to 250 hours, reducing operating costs and downtime. Tilt cylinder hydraulic hoses have been rerouted for improved hose reliability, better hose movement and improved visibility to the attachment.

Interior cab improvements also include a number of multi-function display panel upgrades on a centralized monitor that allows the operator to view comprehensive machine system information. The centralized monitor displays critical machine information—such as engine rpm, engine coolant temperature, fuel level, machine warnings, time and the transmission selected gear. A key exterior cab improvement is lowered front side glass, providing improved visibility of operations. A new door threshold eases cab entering and exiting.

The newest addition to the company’s mixer truck line is the KF3200C, a front discharge model on track for spring 2014 rollout. The KF3200C is the industry’s first front discharge model with CAN bus technology, including real-time graphical user interface (screen shown here in upper right of cab). Kimble officials cite strong experience with CAN bus technology, having deployed an identical system to the KF3200C’s last year in a new rear discharge mixer model, the K2200C. Customer experience has shown how the technology augments mixer fleet operation and maintenance. The CANLINK system enables the operator to have fingertip controls of all mixer functions. A full color graphic display provides information with a simple and intuitive interface. Real-time diagnostics afford easy troubleshooting of all electronic components, including wire numbers and transducer readings.

Augmenting driver productivity and safety by curtailing slump rack routines, while tightening control of postcharging water additions, the automatic Load and Go is configured with standard output of 12 gallons of water, piped at 1,200 psi over 30-second cycles. It consists of two main components: 1) small footprint pump station with 45-gal. reservoir, 30-hp motor, ball and solenoid valves, and touch screen control panel whose PLC functions enable an infinite combination of mixer fleet-specific water volume, pressure and wash cycle settings; and, 2) four-leg aluminum frame bearing on a 24-in. high, ¼-in. thick galvanized steel foundation rack, with a footprint just under 15 ft. wide, 9 ft. deep netting 11.5 feet of horizontal (ground level) and nearly 15 feet of vertical clearance.

The foundation is typically built with 20-in. diameter cast-in-place columns or comparably dimensioned precast blocks. The rack is fitted with galvanized steel and stainless steel components, the standard package featuring a 1-in. water line charging two top and two side spray bars sporting 40 or more proprietary Key Solutions nozzles.
