Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter ranked among public officials garnering recognition in the most recent PCA Sustainable Leadership Awards program for use of insulating concrete forms for urban housing, pervious concrete, or full-depth reclamation with concrete in road construction. Initiated in 2008 to heighten state and local decision makersÌ awareness of the long-term, positive impacts of concrete infrastructure and building construction on both community and environment, PCA’s Leadership Awards honor public officials who incorporate concrete and cement-based products in sustainability-promoting policies and projects. Accordingly, awards are granted in four categories.
2009 Sustainable Leadership Awards recipients include:
Leadership in Sustainability Policy Award –
- Coweta County, Ga.: County Engineer Wayne Kennedy for use of full-depth reclamation with concrete in road construction.
- Camp Rapid, S.D.: Engineering Manager Dale Ludens for use of pervious concrete in parking lot construction.
- Fairfield County, S.C.: Transportation Committee Chairman James McGraw for use of full-depth reclamation with concrete in road construction.
Homes and Residential Building Projects Award –
Philadelphia, Pa.: Mayor Michael Nutter for use of insulated concrete forms in home building.
Non-Residential Building Projects –
Highland, Calif.: The City of Highland for use of insulated concrete forms in public library construction.
Infrastructure Projects Award –
Queen Anne’s County, Md.: Queen Anne’s County Board of Commissioners recognized for use of pervious concrete in parking lot construction.
In addition, PCA announced a Call for Entries for its 2010 Sustainable Leadership Awards program. To be eligible, construction and planning activities must have occurred between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009. The deadline to submit final entries is May 3, 2010.
