Charah, an ash-management service provider for coal-fired electric utilities, has launched a line of recycled coal ash products with the potential to augment a project’s LEED rating points and certification. The EcoProducts Series spans: a) EcoAggregate, a bottom ash-derived, +3/8-in. coarse aggregate typically used as base material for commercial building pads, asphalt aggregate, road base, and chip & seal aggregate; b) EcoSand, a coarse grade typically used as fill, pipe bedding, drainage medium, traction control material, road base, chip & seal aggregate, and base material for commercial building pads, flowable fill, and concrete or asphalt mixes; and, c) EcoFill, an all-weather material–formulated from fly ash and bottom ash–that is easily worked in wet conditions, achieves greater than 95 percent Standard Proctor compaction, and suits backfill or engineered fills applications, plus flowable fill formulations. EcoProducts commercial applications have included use of EcoSand as an aggregate in Quikrete packaged dry-mix products sold at Home Depot stores in select markets. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2), of which Charah is a charter member, has recognized the company with two awards tied to the beneficial use of ash in packaged concrete.
