Released by the Portland Cement Association (PCA), Seismic Detailing of Concrete Buildings is a comprehensive summary of 2006 International Building Code seismic detailing requirements. Numerous tables and figures illustrate the provisions for components in buildings located in regions of moderate and high seismic risk.
A supplemental CD of electronic files prepared by PCA assists the designer in the comprehension and implementation of seismic detailing in working designs. Included among the files are reinforcement details for beams, columns, two-way slabs, walls, and foundations that meet the ACI 318 seismic provisions. Detailing for each structural element is presented in three formats: Drawing Exchange Format (DXF), Auto Cad (DWG), and Portable Document Format (PDF).
Evidence from recent earthquakes indicates that correctly designed concrete structures can survive such turbulence without significant loss in strength. Buildings vital to post-earthquake operations, such as hospitals, fire stations, power plants, and communications centers, especially benefit from concrete construction that conforms to seismic-zone requirements.
