Chicago mainstay Prairie Material Sales delivered 5,000 yd. of self consolidating mixes for the Trump International Hotel and Tower’s 10-ft. thick, 198 _ 60-ft. mat foundation (also see Editorial, page 4). The SCC spec helped minimize the amount of labor required on the Sept. 30-Oct. 1 pour, the largest placement to date of SCC in North America. Chicago architect/engineer Skidmore, Owings & Merrill specified the SCC mix following experience with the material on an overseas job.
The Trump tower will rise more than 90 stories and consume 180,000 yd. of high performance and conventional concrete mixes. It is built along a prime Chicago stretch that is no stranger to concrete milestones, as shown on the accompanying map. When opened in 1959, the Hotel 71 was known as the Executive House; at 371 ft. high, it was the world’s tallest reinforced concrete building.
In the mid 1960s, the nearby Marina City Û whose corncob-shaped twin towers rank among the world’s most recognizable concrete buildings Û set a new height record of 588 ft. Adjacent to the Trump International is River Plaza, one of the first high rises to carry high strength concrete (> 7,000 psi) specs for lower level columns.
