Cummins is replacing its mixer and dump truck-worthy ISM engine with the ISX11.9, a model complying with lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission guidelines the Environmental Protection Agency has set for on-highway diesel power sold after January 1, 2010. The manufacturer anticipates the new engine will offer fuel economy gains up to 5 percent compared to EPA-2007 generation models.

The ISX11.9 will feature the new Cummins Aftertreatment System, incorporating Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst technology as a companion to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) that equipped engines for EPA 2007. The SCR technology entails a second vessel in which DPF exhaust is treated with urea, or diesel exhaust fluid. Cummins distributors will supply Fleetguard DEF in a range of packaging options, beginning in October 2009.

The manufacturer unveiled the ISX11.9 (310Ò425 hp ratings) and bigger bore ISX15 (400Ò600 hp) at the Mid-America Trucking Show, running March 19-21 at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, Louisville. Along with the 2010 ISX series, Cummins also showed ISL9 and other medium-bore power packages with similar exhaust components.
