Michigan-based certification authority NSF International has issued a new Product Category Rule (PCR) for Concrete, reflecting nearly two years of stakeholder-proposed updates to a charter 2013 version. The PCR is a set of industry rules to support development of environmental product declarations (EPD) for ready mixed and manufactured concrete. EPDs respond to calls for product transparency and disclosure from green building standards, market initiatives, and state laws.

Environmental auditor NSF International is accepting comments through July 27 on revisions to NRMCA’s charter Product Category Rule (PCR), issued in 2013 to support Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) covering concrete mix designs. Over the past 18 months, the association has collaborated with the University of Washington-hosted Carbon Leadership Forum plus other stakeholders to draft a revised Concrete PCR reflecting changes in industry practices and international standards.

Global public health organization NSF International, Ann Arbor, Mich., is among the first organizations to be recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a program operator for product category rules (PCR) development and environmental product declarations (EPD) verification. As a PCR and EPD program operator, NSF International will help meet growing demand for standardization of science-based environmental data, reporting and verification.
