Charah lands 2M-ton ash processing contract in Southeast

A Southeastern utility has tapped Charah Solutions for a Closure by Removal impoundment project encompassing upward of 100 acres of ash deposits at a coal-fired power station that was retired in 2015. Work will include installation of environmental controls plus rail infrastructure improvements and extension, along with loadout area construction. Over a multi-year contract, Charah anticipates processing of 2 million-plus tons of impounded material for beneficial use as concrete-grade fly ash, while preparing the former pond acreage to be restored as usable property.

Charah Solutions has secured a multi-year marketing contract for fly ash and bottom ash from Entergy Louisiana’s Nelson Power Plant in Westlake, plus Entergy Arkansas’ Independence and White Bluff Power Plants in Newark and Redfield. Over the next five years, the combined scope of work is anticipated to include over 2 million tons of ash sales for beneficial use, transported via truck or railcar to regional markets. The coal combustion products will be distributed throughout Charah Solutions’ MultiSource materials network of 40-plus nationwide locations, with international sourcing and distribution. A unique distribution system of terminals and processing facilities, the network provides a continuous and reliable supply of supplementary cementitious materials for concrete producers and other customers.

Charah Solutions, Inc., Kentucky-based fly ash processor and marketer, received two safety North Carolina Department of Labor awards last month for an outstanding record of employee safety in 2018—the eighth consecutive year the company garnered such recognition from the agency. The awards reflect Charah Solutions’ safety record at a structural fill project, Brickhaven Mine in Chatham County, and material management at Duke Energy’s Cliffside Steam Station in Shelby. Both sites received a Gold-level Certificate of Safety Achievement, the state’s highest safety award. The Gold Award is based on a days away, restricted or transferred (DART) rate that is at least 50 percent below the statewide benchmark for the industry. North Carolina Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry presented the awards.

Kentucky-based Charah Solutions, Inc. will open a second facility using new grinding technologies for finishing granulated blast furnace slag as a supplementary cementitious material. Scheduled to be fully operational in the third quarter of 2019, the facility is located within Watco’s Greens Port Industrial Terminal (GPIT) on the Houston Ship Channel, and accessible by ship, truck and rail. It will deploy processing methods developed by SCB International, which Charah acquired last year and premiered at a New York terminal.

Concurrent with deploying slag cement finishing technology gained in its mid-2018 acquisition of SCB International, Charah Solutions has installed companion beneficiation equipment at its Sulphur, La., terminal to improve the overall quality of ASTM C618-grade material output. Dubbed MP618 Multi-Process, the SCB-modeled method reduces loss on ignition, ammonia, activated carbon and moisture in fly ash.
