Argos USA channels cement kiln-derived CO2 to ready mixed concrete

Argos USA has anchored a five-member consortium targeting a closed loop model of carbon dioxide capture and recycling in cement and concrete production. In an early-2018 demonstration, the company used CO₂ from its Calera, Ala., cement plant in commercial concrete produced at its Glenwood, Ga., batch plant. That Atlanta-area ready mixed operation is among nearly 100 sites, primarily in the U.S., equipped with CarbonCure Technologies CO₂ storage and injection devices. The CarbonCure process uses the greenhouse gas to promote cement hydration in high to zero slump concrete.

Vulcan Materials Co., Birmingham, Ala., has elevated two senior vice presidents to new posts: Stan Bass, SVP West, overseeing Western and Mountain West Divisions, to chief growth officer, responsible for leading business development, commercial excellence, and strategic growth initiatives; and, Michael Mills, SVP & general counsel, to chief administrative officer, charged with executive oversight of non-financial, administrative functions. Also, Brock Lodge has been promoted from Western Division vice president and general manager to president, and Jerry Perkins, from assistant general counsel to general counsel, maintaining the corporate secretary post.

Positive notes on a good year’s end

The industry entered 2014 with limited tailwind. Last year’s cement shipments and concrete output fell a few points from 2012, and prolonged, catastrophic winter weather hampered construction through the end of March. Before the snow melted, a) good market indicators supporting overdue plant and fleet investment were evident; b) one global and two domestic transactions surfaced, altering the top U.S. and Canadian concrete, cement and aggregate producer ranks; c) ready mixed and manufactured-concrete producers embraced new protocols for the LEED v4 era of green building; and, d) mobile device-suited information technology offerings surfaced, inviting the use of big data analytics to lower concrete production and delivery costs.

Argos USA adds 40 CNG-powered mixers to Texas fleet

McNeilus Cos. will begin delivering compressed natural gas-powered mixer trucks this spring to the Houston and Dallas-Ft. Worth operations of Argos USA, which is preparing for the diesel alternative by equipping plants with compressor and fueling infrastructure.
