Chryso North America has formulated a portland cement clinker + limestone grinding aid to address the higher water demand, lower compressive strength, plastic shrinkage and variable set times that concrete practitioners report when using Type IL in lieu of traditional ASTM C150 Type I/II binder. The EnviroAdd Next Generation Activator is introduced as a liquid in vertical or horizontal grinding mills and serves as an alternative to conventional glycol grinding aids. Chryso NA is working with cement producers to demonstrate how EnviroAdd can be tailored to specific clinker chemistry and impart performance attributes during the finishing process whereby the Type IL exhibits engineering properties more in line with Type I/II cement.
The EnviroAdd Activator launch coincides with public and private construction interests’ increasing approval of widely available Type IL blended cement to lower the carbon dioxide emissions associated with finished concrete. “We’re empowering the industry to overcome key challenges and accelerate the adoption of low-carbon concrete,” says Chryso Cement Additive Sales Director David Colby. “Extensive testing across North America has delivered outstanding results, showcasing how EnviroAdd can significantly reduce CO2 [factors] while improving performance. It’s critical to approach Type IL cement with a careful examination to understand and mitigate potential side effects during a project. We’ve developed the EnviroAdd portfolio specifically to tackle these challenges [and] are laser-focused on supporting the industry’s transition to Type IL cement.”
Field-tested across numerous North American projects, EnviroAdd series activators have demonstrated marked strength gains—up to 20-25 percent at one day, 15-20 percent at 28 days—while controlling water demand and cement packset, he affirms. Such performance predictability creates room for process and quality optimization plus further clinker reduction with the use of supplementary cementitious materials like fly ash, natural pozzolan and calcined clay.

A COMPOUNDING COMMITMENT TO THE CANADIAN MARKET
Chryso North America is strengthening its Canada footprint with plans for a Toronto admixture production facility, joining current Montreal and Vancouver operations. Supporting the three facilities are Montreal and Calgary concrete application labs, technical teams from which assist producers with expedited materials troubleshooting and individual solutions to optimize finished product or structure performance. Chryso Canada has also programmed a new site, www.chryso.ca, whose French Canadian or English versions afford ready mixed or manufactured concrete producers across the provinces a services and technology portal.
“We remain committed to being in close business proximity to our customers to provide timely and precise support, both in our labs, as well as in the field” along with “insights and solutions they need to achieve superior results,” says Chryso Canada District Manager, Ontario Okan Duyar, P.E.
