ASTM C01/09 call for Low-Carbon Concrete Workshop papers

Sources: ASTM International, West Conshohocken, Pa.; CP staff

ASTM Committees C01 on Cement and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates are accepting 250- to 300-word abstracts of candidate papers for Workshop on Low-Carbon Concrete, scheduled for December 7, 2025 amid standards development meetings in Atlanta. The program will examine the release of new code requirements, government grants, and increased use of reduced carbon materials in concrete with an eye to measuring their impact on C01 and C09 standards, guides, practices, and test methods. Target paper topics or themes include:

  • Common definitions surrounding global warming potential (GWP basics, calculations, examples); Product Category Rules and Environmental Product Declarations (what are they, how are they obtained, where are they sourced, how long are they good for); and, low-carbon, reduced-carbon, and net zero;
  • Implications for or missing elements within committee documents that need to be addressed in response to industry trends;
  • What do market activity or signals mean for testing (procedures, results, prequalification) and timeliness of results versus application;
  • Qualification, classification and definition of new materials;
  • Adapting to new materials such as Type IL or Type IT cement and supplementary cementitious materials; and,
  • Policy adoptions in practice, i.e. who is using or demanding this type of concrete?

Abstracts can be submitted through May 16 to C01 Chair Nick Popoff (St Marys Cement), [email protected], or C09 Chair Rich Szecsy (Big Town Concrete), [email protected].
