Management views the role as crucial for the overall success of Freightliner and Western Star market share and residual values. Mack Trucks recently announced the use of artificial intelligence technology for adaptive maintenance as part of the Premium Service Contract, programmed to increase customer uptime, return on investment and improve service for small- and medium-sized fleets.

Through AI, maintenance service intervals are automatically adjusted dynamically by reviewing data such as fuel and oil usage, engine hours and idle time. The result is an optimized maintenance schedule tailored to the customer’s operations and actual data. Customers can pursue maintenance when needed—not too early and not too late.

“Utilizing AI, which constantly consumes connected customer data, we are able to adjust in real-time maintenance schedules and needs best for the truck and our customers’ operations,” says Mack Trucks North America President Jonathan Randall. “Adaptive maintenance, including time-based or mile-based engine hours, triggers the dealer to schedule maintenance at the appropriate time, reducing downtime.”

“When AI detects that the truck needs to receive a valve adjustment at 150,000 miles and an oil change at 120,000 miles, the truck is serviced at 120,000 miles to reduce an additional stop,” adds Director of Contract Services and Business Technology Solutions Mike Furst.

RapidWorks, Boston-based provider of software solutions for heavy construction equipment companies, has acquired FleetCommand, a premier Software-as-a-Service solution focused on fleet maintenance. Effective, well-managed fleet maintenance is a key factor in driving greater equipment utilization and profitability, RapidWorks contends, noting that “FleetCommand brings a robust, purpose-built solution focused on fleet maintenance and will integrate seamlessly with RapidWorks’ suite of tools, automating critical workflows and making it easier for customers to manage both preventative and reactive maintenance programs.”
