Concrete mortar/ink printing technology specialist Black Buffalo 3D Corp. recently hosted an inaugural training session for Laborers International Union of North America, Eastern Region. Staged at the company’s Union, N.J. headquarters, the event marked the start of a hands-on series through which participants gain knowledge on methods of construction, learn the skills and perspectives needed to participate in every stage of a 3D printing project from wall assembly through move-in.
“Interest in 3D construction printing is growing. Having a trained workforce of professional construction craft laborers ready to call to action will help get more projects going,” says Black Buffalo 3D CEO Mike Miceli. “[Union members] will benefit from collaboration and access to our facility and Nexcon printers, while our teams work to finetune a repeatable training curriculum that will help LIUNA remain prepared as the future of construction becomes today’s reality.”
“These initial training sessions—covering everything from site prep to the printing process to installation—will allow our members to get hands on experience and exclusive access to the latest in 3D construction printing technology and future proof their skillset to assist on upcoming projects,” adds LIUNA Eastern Regional Manager and Vice President Michael Hellstrom.
The Black Buffalo-LIUNA partnership is geared to creating a pool of skilled and experienced trades to address the growing demand for 3D construction workers. The ability to source immediately available labor will increase the comfort of builders and developers to shift from traditional methods to stronger, safer, and more efficient 3D construction printers. Black Buffalo 3D supports established and prospective practitioners by offering Nexcon printers, Planitop 3D proprietary mortar/ink, and operational expertise through its New Jersey office. The company was the first to meet ICC-ES AC509 criteria for 3D printing of structural concrete walls—a significant step in proving additive construction technology is a viable, efficient alternative to traditional methods.
