Carbon Limit CoolCrete SCM tames heat island effect

Carbon Limit, developer of the CaptureCrete admixture proven to sequester carbon dioxide in finished slabs or structures, has announced CoolCrete, a concrete additive line infused with heat-reducing capabilities. To bring this first-of-its-kind product to commercial and residential projects worldwide, Carbon Limit has tapped two licensing partners, NCP Industries and Bison Innovative Products, soon to launch a series of innovative products incorporating CoolCrete technology.

CoolCrete is a functional supplementary cementitious material that replaces up to 40 percent of conventional binder and reduces the carbon footprint of concrete production by a corresponding level. It achieves temperature reduction through improved solar reflectance and enhanced thermal emittance. By boosting concrete’s ability to reflect sunlight, CoolCrete helps reduce overall heat absorption in a concrete slab or structure, while simultaneously releasing the absorbed heat more efficiently.

Incorporating CoolCrete into concrete projects offers an opportunity for user entities to generate high quality, validated and verified carbon credits, Carbon Limit notes. The agent is designed to directly combat the heat island effect frequently cited in urban areas and driving higher energy consumption due to increased air conditioning loads. Early data shows CoolCrete can reduce the temperature of concrete by up to 6°C.

“We’ve created an enhanced sustainable solution to directly address the heat crisis we’re experiencing across the globe, especially in highly populated urban areas,” says Carbon Limit Founder and CEO Tim Sperry. “Concrete is the second-most used material in the world after water, and global construction will only continue to expand. Through CoolCrete, we can put our homes, offices and even roads to work.”

NCP Industries and Bison Innovative Products currently offer a range of products that incorporate the licensed CaptureCrete formula. Both have begun work on new editions of premier products that integrate CoolCrete technology. With products expected to come to market by year end, NCP Industries and Bison Innovative Products will play a key role in making CoolCrete-bearing agents readily available to consumers and design professionals.

“Combining Carbon Limit’s technology with our products has been a seamless effort. It doesn’t require new machinery, grants flexibility since we license the formula, is cost-efficient and helps the environment,” notes NCP Industries President Ryan Collison. “Carbon Limit allows us to expand our support of sustainable construction, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue this effort by getting CoolCrete-infused products on the shelves soon.” — Carbon Limit, Boca Raton, Fla.

GCP, SYSDYNE, CARBONCURE VETERAN NAMED NEW COMMERCIAL CHIEF
Carbon Limit has named Gabriel Carrero as chief commercial officer. He arrives after two-plus decades in concrete materials and software, with sales and marketing or commercial officer tours at GCP Applied Technologies, Sysdyne Technologies and, more recently, CarbonCure Technologies. At Carbon Limit, he is tasked with commercialization and strategic development of the flagship CaptureCrete product and forthcoming concrete mix agents.

“Gabriel’s commercial instincts are unmatched, and his track record speaks for itself,” says Carbon Limit CEO Tim Sperry. “He has consistently demonstrated the ability to drive growth and meet customer needs with cutting-edge solutions throughout his career.” From GCP to Sysdyne to CarbonCure positions, he adds, Carrero showcased extensive topline revenue performance and market share growth with an initial focus on North America and Latin America regions—yielding major success that drove his scope of work to the global level.

The appointment follows Carbon Limit’s recent naming of Jeremy Healey as president and Joel Richardson as chief financial officer. The company was also recently selected as a recipient of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration’s $19.5 million grant to advance sustainable and resilient infrastructure solutions.
