Mack Industries of Valley City, Ohio has acquired Bluffton Precast Concrete Co., a Bluffton, Ohio business under the Akin family for 55 years. The deal marks an eighth precast operation for Mack Industries, joining home state, Michigan, North Carolina and Florida plants, along with four Ohio ready mixed concrete sites.

“We are honored to work with the team at Bluffton and continue the legacy of quality precast built by the Akin family,” says Mack Industries CEO Betsy Mack Nespeca, third generation business leader. The transaction improves the two companies’ capabilities to provide quality, service and additional resources for customers in northwest Ohio and surrounding markets, she adds. Their combined offering will include manholes, catch basins, big block retaining wall, plus box culvert, wastewater and stormwater systems, highway barriers and pump station structures.

“We wanted a succession plan with a company that has the same values as ours. I strongly believe we found that with Mack Industries,” affirms Bluffton Precast Vice President – Operations Michael Akin. “I believe Mack will continue to build on the legacy that my father started many years ago. Bluffton Precast Concrete is in the right hands.”

Heidelberg Materials North America has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Carver Sand & Gravel, the largest aggregates producer in the Albany, N.Y. area. The deal includes four quarries and three sand & gravel pits, their combined reserves totaling 70 million metric tons, plus a trucking business, and two asphalt plants. With a payroll hovering 200, Carver S&G produces about 1.8 million metric tons of materials annually and has capacity upward of 3 million metric tons per year. Coupled with transaction, the parties plan a strategic partnership in the Albany area for land and marine logistics.

“The business is a great fit and further expands our footprint in the eastern portion of the very attractive New York market,” says Heidelberg Materials North America Northeast Region President Matteo Rozzanigo.

“We built Carver Sand & Gravel from scratch into a successful mining operation with a strong market position in our corner of New York,” adds Carver Laraway, chief executive officer of Carver Companies and the Port of Coeymans. “While this is a big step for our company, partnering with Heidelberg Materials comes with incredible upside for everyone.”

Dallas-based construction and lightweight aggregates producer Arcosa Inc. will gain a strong foothold in the New York-New Jersey Metropolitan Statistical Area—the largest U.S. Census Bureau-designated MSA—in a deal for the construction materials business of Stavola Holding Corp., Tinton Falls, N.J. Arcosa has entered a definitive agreement acquire five quarries, five recycled aggregate sites and 12 asphalt plants in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, their reported sales totaling $283 million for a fiscal year ending June 30.

“Since becoming an independent public company in 2018, Arcosa has successfully executed against its long-term vision to grow in attractive markets and reduce the complexity and cyclicality of the overall business through strategic acquisitions and select divestitures,” says CEO Antonio Carillo. “Over that time, we have expanded our Construction Products business both organically and inorganically, deploying approximately $1.5 billion on value enhancing acquisitions and increasing our aggregates presence in the top 50 MSAs.” The latest transaction accelerates a strategic transformation, he adds, ushering “a premier aggregates-led platform in the nation’s largest MSA with favorable attributes from its exposure to lower volatility infrastructure-led end-markets. Stavola brings an experienced management team, strong customer service reputation, and successful track record.”

Concurrent with the Stavola Holding deal, Arcosa announced a definitive agreement to sell its steel railcar and mining components business to Stellex Capital Management LLC, New York-based private equity firm.

IMI DEPLOYS BCMI DISPATCH
Irving Materials Inc. (imi) of Greenfield, Ind. has announced a new initiative to install cloud-based concrete dispatch from BCMI Corp., a software developer for the bulk construction materials industry based in Redmond, Wash. “As part of our ERP implementation with IFS, we conducted an assessment of the tools available for dispatch,” says CEO Pete Lyons. “After an extensive, six-month evaluation we concluded that BCMI’s combination of current product offerings, plus the opportunity to take part in the continued development of the product, was the best fit for what imi needs to service our customers and our internal teams.”

The new dispatch system will be installed across imi’s Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee concrete operations. The move to BCMI Dispatch is the result of a years-long collaboration between the producer and programmer to create accessible business software with customer service at its core. imi looks to serve its customer base better by improving internal processes, largely by leveraging cloud-based software that can use API connections to share business critical information quickly across the organization. BCMI Dispatch will integrate with cloud-enabled systems, including IFS.

“BCMI’s core mission is to be the technical partner of choice for producers,” affirms President and Co-Founder Craig Yeack. “Every aspect of our company is influenced by marquee producers like imi. We are honored to be taking this journey with them.” Along with the expansion at imi, he adds, BCMI’s cloud-based dispatch is being deployed by leading ready-mix producers in 24 states.
