The Santee Cooper Power Winyah Generating Station is the flagship Staged Turbulent Air Reactor installation, processing harvested coal ash at the coastal South Carolina site to concrete grade material. The SEFA acquisition reflects a continued focus on building a sustainable future and positioning Heidelberg Materials as the front runner on the path to carbon neutrality and a circular economy in construction materials.

Heidelberg Materials has entered into a definitive purchase agreement to acquire The SEFA Group Inc., the largest U.S. source of harvested fly ash processed to ASTM C 618 performance. Based in Lexington, S.C., SEFA Group supplies ash to 800 concrete plants in 13 states, and spans five business units, five utility partners, 20 locations and a 500-plus payroll. Leading the company’s intellectual property is the Staged Turbulent Air Reactor, or STAR, the most advanced recycling technology for impounded or landfilled coal ash. STAR installations presently beneficiate upwards of 1 million tons per year.

“The acquisition of The SEFA Group will further strengthen our cementitious footprint in the fast growing Southeastern U.S. market,” says Heidelberg Materials North America CEO Chris Ward. “We welcome the addition of this innovative business and its talented employees  as we grow our portfolio of sustainable products, technologies and solutions on the path to Net Zero.”

“Our company’s focus on sustainability, customer service, and a technology-driven approach to running our businesses make [us] a great addition to the Heidelberg Materials operations in North America,” adds SEFA Group CEO Gregg Hendrix.

“SEFA Group has a rich history, a strong culture and suite of businesses that complement our existing footprint,” affirms Heidelberg Materials Southeast Region President Scott Dickson. “I am excited to welcome The SEFA Group to Heidelberg Materials and look forward to building on their legacy of innovation and sustainable development.”
