Astec and CarbonCure Technologies enter sales, service partnership

CarbonCure Technical Services Engineer Carly Paige equips a Colorado ready mixed plant for carbon dioxide gas storage, injection and mineralization.

Tennessee-based plant equipment leader Astec Industries has become exclusive ready mixed concrete market channel partner in the U.S. and Canada for CarbonCure Technologies. Collaboration with the Halifax, Nova Scotia developer of namesake carbon dioxide injection and mineralization technology for fresh concrete supports sustainability measures under the OneAstec business model. Astec’s BMH, Con-E-Co and RexCon concrete batch plant brands will offer CarbonCure equipment and support to existing and future accounts. CarbonCure will continue to serve legacy accounts in North America—home to 350-plus ready mixed plants fitted with CO2 storage, injection and controls packages—and maintain its current sales program.

The CarbonCure process raises finished concrete performance, while also lowering slabs or structures’ embodied carbon profile. The latter function is achieved by permanently sequestering CO2 gas sourced from industrial waste streams and, in many instances, reducing the volume of portland cement required for a mix to reach a target design strength. CarbonCure’s CO2 mineralization, moreover, nets a supplementary binder effect.

“Sustainability is a key component of OneAstec. It’s important that we do our part in protecting the environment through our own operations and by helping customers achieve their sustainability goals,” says Astec Industries CEO Barry Ruffalo. “CarbonCure’s technology offers a real solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We’re proud to facilitate that by offering the technology with our ready-mix concrete plants to customers looking for environmentally friendly solutions.”

“Astec’s notable presence in the industry and key relationships with concrete producers make them well suited to help advance our collective vision to make our technology a standard for concrete production around the globe,” adds CarbonCure CEO Robert Niven. “Our partnership with Astec advances CarbonCure’s significant growth momentum across North America and represents a shift in our business model as we expand product distribution channels beyond direct sales. Forming strategic partnerships with industry leaders like Astec who share our commitment to sustainable innovation will play an integral role in CarbonCure’s growth.”
