ASTM Committee C27 on Precast Concrete Products is set to publish a standard (C1889) for designing drainage and utility infrastructure. The document essentially codifies requirements for precast structures from American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials load and resistance factor design (LRFD) specifications, and also addresses soil, hydrostatic, surcharge plus other loads.

“[C1889] will allow owners and engineers to specify a unified standard in place of referencing numerous other codes, and it supports industry standards for product manufacturers,” says C27 member and Oldcastle Infrastructure Engineering Manager Hugh Martin. The document likewise supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 (responsible production and consumption) by educating the engineering community in a way that reduces overuse of materials in manufacturing for infrastructure, he adds.

Committee C27’s next meeting is December 10-11, Houston. ASTM staff liaison: Joseph Hugo, 610/832-9740; [email protected].
