ASTM C09 formulates colloidal silica standard

The proposed New Specification for Colloidal Silica for Use in Concrete (WK60809) under ASTM Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates will cover a versatile nanoparticle imparting durability characteristics in slabs and structures.

Measured against a control with conventional mix (left), Intelligent Concrete illustrates the improved surface quality of nano silica-dosed concrete in flatwork (right). Cylinders subject only to standard leveling off likewise show the surface characteristics of control (left) and nano silica agent-bearing (right) mixes.

“Practical applications for colloidal silica in concrete include everything from walkway pavements to building foundations,” says Jon Belkowitz, director of Research & Development for Denver-based Intelligent Concrete, LLC. “Colloidal silica will help end-users create a concrete mixture that has a longer service life without compromising fresh/hardened properties and getting gray concrete down the shoot and into the forms.”

Having an ASTM International standard will give contractors, engineers and architects more confidence on using colloidal silica concrete in their projects, he adds. WK60809 will be on the agenda during C09 meetings, December 8-11 in Houston. Committee contact: Scott Orthey, 610/832-9730; [email protected].
