A New Era

Casilio Concrete celebrates 80 years with a rebranding and fleet upgrade.

Casilio Concrete has been a staple in the Lehigh Valley ready mix scene since 1938 when it was known as Frank Casilio & Sons. To mark last year’s 80th anniversary, third-generation owner Maria Medei decided it was time to rebrand and display the company’s true colors. When her grandfather Frank Casilio, an Italian immigrant, started the Bethlehem, Pa.-based company he wanted the color scheme to match the Italian flag. However, the trucks he ordered arrived in orange, green and white. Instead of having them corrected, he kept the color scheme and focused his efforts on delivering quality products and service as well as expanding the company. Now, thanks to his granddaughter, Casilio Concrete proudly displays its heritage with updated fleet graphics that honor the Old Country from Scribbles & Drips Lettering & Graphics of Laurys Station, Pa.

The Casilio Concrete fleet includes 22 front discharge and six rear discharge mixers, the latest a Mack Granite 64FR bearing 11-yd. Con-Tech. Future mixer graphics will be themed akin to the First Responders and Veterans trucks, or reflect Italian flag colors.

The family owned and operated producer serves more than a 60-mile radius of eastern Pennsylvania and western New Jersey with three batch plants—located in Bethlehem, Pa., Allentown, Pa., and Kutztown, Pa.—material hauling, and a mixed fleet of nearly 30 trucks. Medei entered the business in 1981, and took the helm in 2015. She upholds the same dedication, work ethic and passion as her father John and grandfather Frank did, maintaining Casilio Concrete’s reputation as an unmistakable leader in the industry.

Medei is also joined at the company by the next generation: her son Tony serves as vice president and daughter Natalie serves in an executive assistant/marketing role. Tony also runs Casilio’s Crushcrete facility in Hellertown, Pa. The concrete and asphalt shingle recycling center serves Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware, and observed its 20-year anniversary in 2018.

SALUTING VETERANS, FIRST RESPONDERS

While upgrading the company’s fleet, Tony Medei saw an opportunity to stand out from the competition while paying tribute to first responders and military veterans. Working with Scribbles & Drips, they were able to create eye-catching designs for two new trucks—an Oshkosh S-2346 and Terex FD 4000.

Scribbles & Drips used satin desert digital camo prints as well as made their own graphics for the Terex truck’s veteran tribute. Satin over laminate was applied to all the graphics, along with gloss accents on the logos. Obsessive Car Detailing of Slatington, Pa., applied a ceramic coat to protect the design elements from harmful contaminants the mixer would encounter at the batch plants and job sites. A similar process was used for the Oshkosh first responder tribute truck.

The trucks have proved a differentiator for Casilio Concrete, Maria Medei notes: “We have a lot of competition in our area; seven other producers in the Lehigh Valley. We have moving billboards and might as well use them as a tool. Trucks have been used for a police night out, veterans festival and kids’ ‘touch a truck’ gatherings. We put our best drivers in these new trucks and know they will keep them looking good.”

In the current labor market, companies are struggling to recruit and retain good drivers and operators. Casilio Concrete is no different. Updating the company’s fleet is just one strategy it is using to address the issue. New trucks give drivers a sense of pride in their work, explains Maria. The company plans to order two to three new mixers to be delivered in 2020. In addition to a modernized fleet, the company offers an attractive benefit package, competitive salary, and accommodates a healthy work-life balance to entice potential hires. Casilio Concrete stays true to its authenticity and values by treating its employees as members of its own family. As the company enters a new era with a fresh look, it hopes to build on the legacy of its past generations and continue to be a mainstay in the Lehigh Valley for years to come.
