Forney programs machine ‘awareness’ of test specimens

Upgrades continue for ForneyVault technology, a cloud-based system that helps construction materials testing laboratories provide trustworthy test results thanks to auditable, unalterable records management capability. The system improves lab productivity, affords end users data with a high level of confidence, and backstops a lab’s proof of accurate, timely procedures. Among the latest system enhancements:

Bar codes afford specimen attribute retrieval from cloud-enabled ForneyVault.
  • Bar code labeling to allow test machine retrieval of specimen attributes from ForneyVault, in turn facilitating equipment “awareness” of test coupon properties;
  • Variance assessment allowing comparison to similar specimens or expected specifications; and,
  • Deviation detection to warn of a prospective faulty test.

New functions stem from what programmers note are ForneyVault’s unique ability to “tell” the machine what is being subjected to a compressive strength measurement. No matter how sophisticated, machines generally operate without supporting information wherein technicians must a) individually decide how to set up and control the test; and, b) cannot automatically compare subsequently generated test data with other information. The technician typically forwards information along for review, and problems are identified later.

Ideally, Forney engineers note, the test machine should compare immediate to expected results, then alert the technician so corrective action can be taken if necessary. Test machines coupled with ForneyVault are aware of what is being tested; essentially they become “smart” equipment as they are provided with information allowing all parties a quicker, better understanding of material properties and test efficacy.

“The powerful, sophisticated database underlying ForneyVault, connected with increasingly digitized construction software systems, enables this new generation of ‘aware,’ ‘smart’ machines. It’s another step in the transformation of the industry, and [has] been well received by the marketplace,” says Forney CEO Jeff Dziki. “ForneyVault-equipped labs are now processing specimens at a rate exceeding 250,000 tests per year. We expect that number to skyrocket over the next few years.” Forney LP, Pittsburgh, 800/367-6397; www.forneyonline.com
