NRMCA Chairman, Committees honor annual award recipients

Convening in Tampa, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association committees and divisions recognized individuals and groups for association and industry contributions. Concrete Products joins NRMCA in saluting those honored at the 2019 convention, by AWARD:



Allen Hamblen
WILLIAM B. ALLEN

Allen Hamblen is president and chief executive officer of CalPortland Co., Glendora, Calif., and served as 2015 NRMCA and 2017-18 Portland Cement Association Chairman. The Allen Award recognizes outstanding leadership in advancing the ready mixed concrete industry and improving operations’ financial health, performance and sustainability. It is named after Bill Allen, who had more than 50 years’ experience in concrete and aggregates production, transitioning from Memphis ready mixed business owner to building the industry’s top management consultancy, Allen-Villere Partners.

The Safety, Environmental and Operations Committee (SEO) presented the 2019 Carpenter Award to Cemex USA Environmental Director, Eastern Region Denise Corrales, who oversees compliance measures for 100-plus ready mixed and 25 concrete block plants. It honors her contributions to SEO, especially as Environmental Task Group chair and judging of the Committee’s Environmental Excellence Awards program and National Mixer Driver Championship. An equipment and fleet management manager at West Palm Beach, Fla.-based Rinker Materials, Joseph Carpenter was instrumental in forming the NRMCA Committee on Maintenance, since evolved to SEO.

CONCRETE CARES

The Manufacturers, Products & Services Division presented the 2019 Concrete Cares Award to producers in two categories, each recipient designating a charitable organization to which the Division donates $1,000. Casa Redimix Concrete Corp. of the Bronx, N.Y., was recognized in the first (< 250,000 yd./annual production) for a host of local community contributions, led by “Delivering Awareness One Yard at a Time,” a mixer truck graphics campaign carrying messages of cancer prevention; an annual golf outing benefitting the Cancer Institute of St. Francis Hospital; and, annual distribution of 2,000 turkey dinners and care packages to families or individuals in need. Casa Redimix Sales Manager Joe Casale accepted the award.

Cemex USA was recognized in the second Concrete Cares category (> 250,000 yd./annual production) for a program, “Safer Roads Together,” in which it teamed with the League of American Bicyclists on a safety campaign emphasizing awareness of potential blind spots around mixer trucks plus accident-free riding and driving on the roads. Cyclists participating in campaign events were able to see first hand the limited side and rear visibility mixer or tanker truck drivers have from their cabs. Cemex USA’s Chad Hustedde accepted the award.

The Research, Engineering and Standards Committee honored industry veteran Frank Kozeliski with an award named for an NRMCA staff technical ace who capped his long career as Engineering Division executive vice president. The Committee especially acknowledged Kozeliski’s passion for concrete as demonstrated in education and promotion efforts, plus keeping things simple for industry workers and technicians. On behalf of NRMCA, the American Concrete Institute and ASTM International, he has brought the message of sound concrete practice to audiences in Africa, Asia and South America.

PROMOTER OF THE YEAR–BUILDINGS

The Promotion Committee’s Buildings Promoter of 2019 is Martin Marietta General Manager, Metro Ready Mix Oliver Brooks. Members recognize the pivotal role he has played in the statewide Build with Strength campaign launch through the Colorado Ready Mixed Concrete Association; and, leading a BWS working group to perpetuate the brand and message while fostering Design Assistance Program referrals and project conversions from alternative specs to cast-in-place concrete.

PROMOTER OF THE YEAR–PAVEMENT

The Promotion Committee named Duane Coy, sales manager for Oklahoma-based Dolese Bros., as Pavement Promoter of 2019. Members recognize his efforts to advance Pave Ahead, a local-pavement companion to the Build with Strength coalition for the low- to mid-rise building market; and, fully utilize NRMCA Local Paving Department’s Boot Camp resources to educate internal and external customers of Oklahoma-based Dolese Bros.

Promoter of the Year–STATE AFFILIATE

The Promotion Committee named Mississippi Concrete Association (MCA) Executive Director Joel Waters as State Affiliate Promoter of the Year, crediting his “tireless promotion of NRMCA’s Build with Strength and Pave Ahead campaigns.” In the former, Waters a) leveraged NRMCA Structures & Sustainability staff to host 21 lunch & learn sessions enlightening architects and other targets on insulating concrete form construction and wall performance; teamed with the American Institute of Architects of Mississippi for an MCA “Day of Concrete” gathering; and, lobbied the state insurance commissioner to sponsor a bill requiring statewide adoption of building practice consistent with Institute for Building & Home Safety Fortified program guidelines.

STATE ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR

The Connecticut Ready Mixed Concrete Association and its Concrete Promotion Council earned the NRMCA Promotion Committee’s State Association of 2019 honor. Highlights and activities throughout a productive and pivotal 2018 included CRMCA and CPC’s development of a complete web and social media presence, fueled by a marketing communications campaign with 10 press releases and 62 e-blast messages to architects, engineers, builders and contractors; Build with Strength awareness campaign; insulating concrete form promotion, anchored by 10 sessions for building officials and stakeholders; and, leadership in a transportation infrastructure funding push under the “Move CT Forward” banner. Accepting the award was CRMCA Executive Director Dominic DiCenzo.

Scott Parson
CHAIRMAN’S AWARD

2018 NRMCA Chairman Rodney Grogan (MMC Materials) honored his immediate predecessor Scott Parson (CRH Americas Materials) and announced a renaming of the annual honor to the Robert Garbini Award, recognizing the longtime NRMCA staff president who retired at the close of the 2019 convention. The award is in appreciation for individuals’ dedication to NRMCA and exceptional work for the industry.
