Developer of rebar-tying robot takes top AGC-Autodesk award

Saxonburg, Pa.-based Brayman Construction and its affiliate, Advanced Construction Robotics, took first place and a $10,000 prize in the inaugural Associated General Contractors of America-Autodesk Innovation Awards program for an autonomous rebar-tying robot geared to bridge construction. The TyBot device ties continuously day or night, and takes over after construction crews carry, place and frame-in 10 percent of deck rebar.

The Volumetric Mixer Manufacturers Bureau, a National Ready Mixed Concrete Association affiliate, has finalized certification criteria aimed at building operator professionalism and providing proof of industry-specific knowledge. The Volumetric Mixer Operator Certification Program can be used to provide a career path while improving customer service skills, along with company and industry image. Open to candidates with at least three months’ on-the-job experience, the NRMCA-administered program spans Safety, Concrete Technology, Volumetric Operation and Maintenance, and Customer and Company Relations sections. Each is covered in a VMMB workbook outlining a standard of knowledge and skills a professional volumetric mixer operator should possess.

Volvo Trucks North America’s European parent has entered an agreement to equip Norway limestone producer Brønnøy Kalk AS with six dump body-bearing Volvo FH cabover models programmed for driverless operation. Following individual vehicle demonstrations this year, the fleet will be deployed in 2019 to haul rock from underground mine to crusher, navigating a three-mile route of tunnels and outdoor roads at the direction of a wheel loader operator.
