Rocla has commenced production at a Ft. Pierce, Fla., operation equipped for up to 1,000 prestressed concrete railroad ties per day. Opened on schedule along the Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) rail network, the facility “is considered to be the most technologically advanced in the country,” notes Rocla Vice President–Business Development Brett Urquhart.

The Troesh Family Foundation, backed by founders of southern California’s Robertson’s Ready Mix, has pledged up to $3 million to the RMC Research & Education Foundation (RMC Foundation), matching on a 1:3 basis new commitments from the industry over the next five years.

The First Quarter 2016 Turner Building Cost Index, a key measurement of the U.S. nonresidential market, has increased 1.15 percent from the prior quarter to a value of 970. “The shortage of skilled labor is outweighing the impact of declining material prices,” says Turner Construction Vice President Attilio Rivetti, who compiles the Cost Index. “As the volume of work remains relatively high, we expect subcontractors to continue to be strategic in pursuits, ultimately resulting in upward cost pressures.”
