Vulcan Materials has published North America’s first self-declared Environmental Product Declaration for aggregates. The document provides data for four primarily concrete-grade fine and coarse aggregates, plus eight other grades best suited to base, drainage and asphalt from the producer’s Pleasanton, Calif., quarry.
The operation serves the San Francisco Bay Area market, where design professionals and facility owners seek supplier or manufacturer EPDs to satisfy new green building rating requirements or incentives, especially those in LEED v4 and Architecture 2030 Challenge for Products. The Pleasanton EPD provides aggregates’ cradle-to-gate impacts using a 1 metric ton declared unit, and reflects a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) per International EPD System: Product Category Rule 2012:01 Construction products and Construction services, Version 2.0. Berkeley, Calif.-based Climate Earth Inc. conducted the LCA and developed the EPD for Vulcan Materials, which joins a client roster that includes two other California operators, Central Concrete Supply, San Jose and Angelus Block Co., Sun Valley.
Available here, the document positions Vulcan Materials as the premier operator with a United States-compliant and -verified EPD for aggregates upon release of a North American Product Category Rule by ASTM International, scheduled for adoption later this year. Notes Vulcan Western Division Manager of Quality Control Ed Luce, the EPD “allows us to support our customers now [with] quantified environmental impact data” on 12 classes of material.
