World of Concrete, February 2-5, is set to have its largest staging in seven years, new show owner Informa Exhibitions US notes, with 1,400-plus suppliers, manufacturers and service providers exhibiting in more than 700,000 net square feet of indoor/outdoor space at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
New to the 2016 World of Concrete exhibit program is a Precast area focusing on precast products, technologies and equipment, including coring machines, pipe unloaders, forms, above/below ground structures, concrete pipe, manholes and septic tanks. It will join the show’s established product and action areas: The Producer Center, a marketplace of materials, equipment, demos, and seminars; Material Handling, offering trucks, excavators and related iron for material delivery, distribution, concrete placement, and earth moving; World of Masonry, showcasing products, tools, information, and technology for block, brick and veneer stone professionals; Technology for Construction, featuring the newest products and tools for the commercial construction industry from top information technology and systems providers; and, Concrete Surfaces & Decorative, showcasing the popularity of decorative concrete for both commercial and residential applications.
The 2016 World of Concrete education program runs Monday, February 1 through Friday, February 5 and spans a full range of concrete material and practice topics; business management seminars; and, technician, equipment operator or trade certification offerings:
- 90-minute seminars encompass Business Finance and Money Matters, Business Leadership & Management, General Business, Concrete 101, Engineering, Masonry, Residential Construction, Safety & Risk Management and Technical Updates tracks. New to this year’s offerings are “Precast Concrete Applications for Overcoming Challenges on Projects,” presented by Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute’s Dean Frank; “Adding Water on Site: To Add or Not to Add?” from Portland Cement Association’s Michelle Wilson; “Masonry Mortar & Grout – Standards, Specs, Testing & Management,” from Bill Kjoritien; and, “Insulating Concrete Forms: Advanced Methods for Larger & More Complicated Projects,” from PCA’s Donn Thompson.
- Three-hour seminars are scheduled in Fundamentals, Production, Repair, Floors & Slabs, Decorative and Business and Project Management tracks. Perennial offerings include Concrete Basics I & II and Concrete Mix Design I & II presented, respectively, by BASF/Master Builders veteran Terry Holland and Cornell Professor Ken Hover. New to the 2016 program is “Concrete Quality Control as a Profit Center,” from Command Alkon’s Jay Shilstone.
- Five hands-on training sessions or labs, three-and-a-half to five hours, themed Surveying, Stamped Concrete, Concrete Fundamentals, Sustaining Concrete and Place & Finish Floors.
- Four-hour seminars or exams involving American Concrete Institute, American Concrete Pumping Association, International Concrete Repair Institute and Tilt-Up Concrete Association certification programs.
- Association & Industry Training from groups including American Concrete Pipe Association, offering Concrete Pipe Installation; Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, Concrete Paver Installer Course; PCI, Quality Control Technician/Inspector Certification and Certified Field Auditor Training & Certification; and, National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators, Articulating Boom Crane Operator Certification.

MACK, MCNEILUS DRIVE CIM AUCTION
Mack Trucks Inc. and McNeilus Cos. are approaching 2016 World of Concrete in customary manner by dispatching a Granite Axle Forward-mounted 11-yd. Bridgemaster mixer truck to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Their donation will anchor the pool of equipment, material and sports/travel packages available in live or silent bidding at the 11th Annual CIM Auction, February 3 in a meeting room above the World of Concrete exhibit floor.
The Mack Truck chassis and McNeilus mixer donation will help ensure a successful event, notes CIM Auction Committee Chairman Mike Philipps (Cemex USA), adding: “The consistent support from these two leading manufacturers speaks volumes to their commitment to the concrete industry and importance they place on the CIM program.”
The 2016 Granite Axle Forward model features a Mack MP7-365M engine and ClearTech HHS SCR emission control with fully catalyzed diesel particulate filter; Allison 4500 RDS Gen 5, 6-speed automatic transmission; Mack UniMax FXL20 20K lb. front axle and S462, 46,000 lb. rear axle; and, Hendrickson HMX 460, 46,000 lb. rear suspension.
The 2016 McNeilus Bridgemaster includes 11-cu.-yd. M80 paver drum with 46-in. opening; 3/16-in. and 1/4-in. AR steel shell and fins; aluminum fenders; remote roller lube; upper ladder gate and wash hose; slump meter; night pour lights; and, 150-gal. aluminum cross mount water tank. McNeilus is also equipping the mixer with its Command Center EP touch drum controls.
Proceeds from the Mack/McNeilus truck and other auction item bids will benefit Concrete Industry Management degree programs at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro; California State University, Chico; New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark; and, Texas State University.
The 11th annual CIM Auction will be held Las Vegas Convention Center North Hall Room N262; silent bidding runs 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and the live auction begins at 1 p.m. Online bidding will be available on the Ritchie Bros. website, to those registering at least a week in advance.
