‘Feral’ gateway structure nabs decorative concrete award

The Doral Park Pavilion by Douglas Wood Associates, Coral Gables, Fla., won the WOW! Award for best overall entry in this year’s Decorative Concrete Council 56 FFiii 300competition, recognizing vertical and horizontal applications. Located on the outskirts of Miami, the structure was designed by internationally-renowned artist Michelle Oka Doner, who envisioned a “feral” gateway to the adjacent Everglades.

The Doral Park Pavilion is a solid, reinforced concrete shell, its top and bottom sections revealing extensive use of custom-routed formwork. A self-consolidating mix with a 24-in. spread and 40 percent fly ash binder factor, was chosen to assure complete filling of the intricate forms. The structure spans 50 feet and extends to a height of 25 feet.

Other winners in the DCC’s seventh annual Decorative Concrete Awards program included Concrete Mystique Engraving of Nashville and T.B. Penick & Sons Inc. of San Diego, each taking three subcategories. Five companies took home two awards each: Concrete Contractors Interstate, Poway, Calif.; Hyde Concrete, Annapolis, Md.; Salzano Custom Concrete, Centreville, Va.; Sundek National Accounts, Arlington, Texas; Shaw & Sons Concrete Inc., Costa Mesa, Calif.; and, Trademark Concrete Systems, Anaheim, Calif. The annual competition spans a host of flatwork, polished slab, interior, artistic and vertical application categories.

A specialty council of the American Society of Concrete Contractors, DCC announced the winners last month at World of Concrete 2015 in Las Vegas.
