PRODUCERS – December 2014

BMC Enterprises Inc., the parent company of St. Louis ready mixed producer Breckenridge Material Co., has closed on an asset deal for four APAC-Missouri aggregate operations. The active Wright City Quarry and Defiance Quarry, plus two additional properties with future aggregate reserves, will operate under a new entity, BMC Stone, LLC.

The acquisition is BMC’s eighth of its kind in the last five years and brings the company’s combined aggregate reserves to almost 2 billion tons. “We are excited to expand our upstream vertical integration,” says BMC Enterprises CEO Nathan McKean. “As a leader in the market, we are pleased to be able to reinvest in the construction materials industry and believe this acquisition continues to demonstrate our constant pursuit of providing the best products and materials for the marketplace.”

Johnnie Hayes, senior sales representative for Hanson Pipe & Precast’s Pelham Prestress Division, was appointed president of the Gulf South Precast/Prestressed Concrete Association, with whom he has been active for nearly 10 years, most recently serving as vice president. One of the key initiatives for the association during his term, which runs through June 2016, is raising awareness of the advantages and economics of using precast/prestressed concrete products in construction among civil engineering students, plus county and state design engineers.

“The GSPCA brings together individual companies, both producers and material suppliers, as a strong collective voice with which to promote and educate end users on the benefits of precast/prestressed concrete products,” says Hayes. “These efforts are essential to keeping our products top of mind with end users and bringing in more business across the category.”

Hayes has spent his entire career on the bridge side of the business, starting in 1986 as a draftsman for Sherman Prestressed Concrete, which after multiple ownership changes now operates under the Hanson Pipe & Precast division of Lehigh Hanson. Hayes and Hanson Pipe & Precast also are members of the Alabama Bridge Contractors Association, Alabama Road Builders, and Association of County Engineers of Alabama.

Separately, Hanson Pipe & Precast Technical Resource Manager Pat Liston, based in San Antonio, was recognized by ASTM International and the American Concrete Pipe Association. ASTM presented him with the 2014 Robert R. Litehiser Award, bestowed annually to a member of the Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe who demonstrates outstanding work in the field. Earlier in the year, Liston received the ACPA President’s Award for Marketing Excellence.

Liston has been a member of the concrete industry for his entire career, serving with Hanson Pipe & Precast since 2006 and at W.T. Liston Co. for 21 years prior. In addition to ASTM and ACPA, he is active in the National Precast Association and the Texas Concrete Pipe Association, where he served as a board member from 1986 to 2006.

“Over the course of his career, Pat Liston has demonstrated a deep commitment to the concrete pipe industry, one that extends beyond his day-to-day work to active participation in and leadership of the organizations that determine the future of our products and their installation,” says Hanson Pipe & Precast Senior Vice President Scott Szwejbkat.
