Garland Sorrells, based at Southern Concrete Materials’ Asheville, N.C. plant, is the 2014 Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional Driver of the Year, recognizing 30-plus years of safe, competent driving and mixer operation, professionalism and customer service.

Nominating his colleague, Southern Concrete Vice President of Safety Gary Gresh noted, “Mr. Sorrells, a second generation concrete worker, is a 51-year heavy truck operator, has driven over one million road miles and boasts zero chargeable accidents on North Carolina roads, is the ‘go to’ guy for sensitive pours and customers, and is regularly seen and heard mentoring young and new mixer drivers.”

A panel of industry judges selected Sorrells as the top driver among nominees from across the U.S., designating two California-based Cemex peers as finalists: Hector Aguilera of Fairfield, a 23-year veteran mixer driver, and Mike Vineyard of Ontario, with 22 years delivering ready mixed. The NRMCA-affiliated Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau will award Sorrells $5,000, and Aguilera and Vineyard $500 each. They will be honored March 3 during the NRMCA Annual Convention in Las Vegas.
