MMC Materials’ Jason Nelson, Prairie Material’s Billy Byrd and Manatt’s Todd Brown took first, second and third place, respectively, in the 2013 NRMCA National Mixer Driver Championship, staged during the group’s ConcreteWorks Conference and Expo, September 21-24 in Las Vegas.

Based at a Greenville, Miss., plant, Nelson has been hauling ready mixed for 16 years, the past nine for MMC Materials Inc., Jackson, Miss., and received $2,500 as champion. A 12-year veteran of VCNA Prairie Materials, Bridgeview, Ill., currently reporting to the producer’s Gary, Ind., plant, Byrd received $1,000 for his second place finish. Based in Grinnell, Iowa, Brown has logged 13 years in the fleet of Manatt’s Inc., Ankeny, Iowa, and was awarded $500.

The 2013 National Mixer Driver Championship featured 41 delivery professionals representing 22 NRMCA producer members. Now in its seventh year under the NRMCA Operations, Environmental and Safety Committee, the event draws winners of state or regional concrete group trucking competitions, or member producers’ internal driver events. Overall scores reflect performance on a 10-station skills course, with choice of rear or front discharge mixers; visual vehicle inspection; and, written exam.
