Hanson Pipe & Precast was selected by Base Construction to provide more than 130,000 ft. of precast concrete pipe, box culverts and inlets for the McLennan County IH-35 project located near Waco, Texas. Construction began in October 2010; Hanson’s products are used to move and manage basic stormwater runoff in the project designed to ease traffic congestion by widening nearly 20 miles of highway and frontage roads. Completion is projected for late 2014.
The project’s use of precast concrete products provides the city with quality, pre-engineered products as a reliable, cost-efficient and sustainable solution for stormwater management. Hanson’s Waco and Austin facilities also allowed for use of local labor and materials, with all structures delivered from within 90 miles of the project site.
“We’re excited to help provide the benefit of decreased highway congestion to Texans and look forward to the finished product,” said Matt Daniel, director of strategic sales and sales manager of Hanson Pipe & Precast’s Austin facility. “We’ve overcome many challenges during the course of this project—such as difficult installation due to multiple intersections, existing utilities and bridge work—but the reduced project site labor due to off-site manufacturing allows us to make sure the project continues to operate on-schedule.”
The total cost of this state-funded project is approximately $167 million, with a portion of that designated for precast concrete product provided by Hanson. To date, Hanson has provided more than 65,000 ft. of round and square precast concrete product.
