Block producers support fire service’s pursuit of ‘balanced design’ in codes

CCMPA is backing Ontario fire-fighting officials’ move to strengthen province building codes with the final leg of a four-legged stool. The producers and fire service representatives favor adding a containment system—ideally of concrete block, capable of limiting the extent of fire, smoke and structural failure—to these “balanced design” criteria: detection system to warn occupants of a fire; automatic suppression system, chiefly fire sprinklers; and, occupant education and training for exposure to emergencies.

ConExpo-Con/Agg & IFPE 2014 exhibit space sales open

Exhibit space sales are open for the next ConExpo-Con/Agg and IFPE exhibitions. The triennial co-located shows will be held March 4-8, 2014, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Companies submitting an application and deposit by the August 15, 2012, priority deadline will be included in a virtual space draw to take place in fall 2012. After August 15, companies will be assigned space on a first-come, first-served basis, according to product category.

ACPA Chairman Bussio proud of growing numbers, programs in tough economy

At a time when all arenas of the building industry are working with bare bones staff and resources, newly elected American Concrete Pipe Association Chairman Vince Bussio of Geneva Pipe Company credits the group’s president, Matt Childs, and his team with managing the budget so effectively that membership numbers are growing and a dues increase was recently passed. “We had a budget freeze, but we were able to grow the staff size over the last couple of years without increasing dues,” says Bussio. “One of the things I’m very proud of is that the majority of the dues go toward programs [and not salaries].”
