Astm Subcommittee Eyes Psi, Hardened Density Pervious Concrete Test Methods

ASTM Subcommittee C09.49 on Pervious Concrete has two proposed standards in the works: WK29212, Test Method for Hardened Density of Pervious Concrete, and ASTM WK29213, Test Method for Compressive Strength of Pervious Concrete

ASTM Subcommittee C09.49 on Pervious Concrete is drafting two proposed standards: WK29212 Test Method for Hardened Density of Pervious Concrete and WK29213 Test Method for Compressive Strength of Pervious Concrete. Producers are desperate for ways to prove they have supplied adequate material. Designers want to be able to both measure and specify the physical properties they desire. And users want to be sure that they are getting what they are buying and want some way to check for functionality of the system, says C09.49 member Walt Flood IV, project manager at Chicago-based Flood Testing Laboratories.

Strength, permeability and durability are all largely governed by the density and void content of the concrete mixture, he adds, noting that ASTM WK29212 will provide a way to reliably determine the critical physical properties of pervious concrete, particularly regarding quality and functionality against specifications.

The task group behind ASTM WK29213 has performed three sets of tests toward the proposed compressive strength standard, which will be useful to pervious concrete producers and testing laboratories, notes C09.49 member Charles Mitchell, principal at Frederick, Md.-based Specialized Engineering. WK29213, he adds, will provide pervious concrete pavement designers a value to use in their projects, and an owner with a standard to verify slab-material strengths.

The subcommittee welcomes additional participation (visit www.astm.org/JOIN) in the WK29212 and WK29213 drafts, and will convene during the Committee C09 week, December 6-8 in New Orleans. Û W. Flood, 773/721-2200; [email protected]; C. Mitchell, 301/607-4180; [email protected]
