The untimely death of Richard D. Stehly on September 18 followed 30 years of dedicated ACI membership, including service as president of the Institute since March. A champion of sustainability during his short time as ACI president and as chair of the Board Advisory Committee on Sustainable Development, he had been highly active in industry response to EPA’s proposed regulation affecting fly ash, testifying in July before a Congressional subcommittee.
Among many roles at the Institute, Stehly served as the first chair of the International Committee and traveled to more than 25 countries, where he presented lectures on various concrete topics to ACI chapter members. His enthusiasm for the American Concrete Institute and the concrete industry was infectious, and our membership, staff, and the entire concrete industry will feel his loss, both personally and professionally, says ACI Executive Vice President Ron Burg.
Stehly was a cofounder of Minneapolis-based American Engineering Testing, Inc. (1989) and American Petrographic Services (1990), which currently employ 300 at 15 offices. A tour of duty at the helm of Anchor Block Co. separated his tenure at American Engineering and Twin City Testing, where he rose from University of Minnesota civil engineering intern to president.
