The Architectural Precast Association named 16 winning projects in the 2010 Awards for Design & Manufacturing Excellence Competition. The program recognizes architectural precast design and production in a range of categories, expanded to nine last year to ensure that each entry Û regardless of size Û is judged on the merits of its respective classification.

Among architectural precast producers recognized as suppliers for winning projects, Oklahoma City-based Structural Stone, LLC, shared the greatest number of awards, honoring Devon Energy Hall and Rawl Practice Facility in Norman, Okla., plus Lissa and Cy Wagner Hall, also in Norman [Educational category], as well as Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y. [Hospitality], and University of Oklahoma College of Allied Health in Oklahoma City [Medical/Government]. Another multiple award winner was Woodbridge, Va.-based Arban & Carosi, Inc., for Potomac Yard – Land Bay A in Alexandria, Va. [Commercial], the Public Safety & Transportation Operation Center in Fairfax, Va. [Medical/Government], and Dulles People Mover in Dulles, Va. [Hospitality]. Likewise, Modern Mosaic Ltd. of Niagara Falls, Ontario, received kudos for 505 Ninth Street and 700 Sixth St. in Washington, D.C., and Two Liberty Center in Arlington, Va. [Commercial].

Twice-honored producers included Dallas Cast Stone Co. for TCU Brown Lupton Student Union Center in Fort Worth, Texas [Educational] and Baron Staff Quarters Dallas Residence [Residential]; and, Kansas City-based Omega Concrete Systems, Inc., for Quintilles in Overland Park, Kan. [Commercial] and Johnson County Sunset Drive Office Building in Olathe, Kan. [Green]. Also sharing awards as architectural precast suppliers for winning projects were Northern Design Precast, Inc., of Loudon, N.H., for Dartmouth College – Tuck School of Business Living Learning Complex in Hanover, N.H. [Educational]; and, Charlotte, N.C.-based Lucas Concrete Products, Inc., for Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colo. [Trim/Landscape].

Judges noted the versatility of architectural precast applications as well as their utility in supporting green construction goals. Detailing of precast windows and architectural walls, for example, achieved articulation complementary with local structures as well as solar shading for energy conservation.
