Coreslab Structures, Inc. (Orlando) has earned a second three-year Safety & Health Achievement Program certification through the University of South Florida and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In 2009, the operation’s Total Recordable Case and Days Away from Work, Restricted or Transferred rates were zero. Between 2007 and 2009, the company’s workers’ compensation premium dropped by nearly 25 percent. According to Coreslab Safety Director Matt Metz, the 24-member staff participated in developing a safety culture once the program’s purpose, goal and benefits were internalized.
Company safety incentives include motivators such as financial rewards, cookouts, jeopardy games and recognition for exemplary practices. Management takes the time and spends the money on teaching us about safety, says David Melbourne, supervisor.
But the biggest incentive was the company imparting safety knowledge to its employees and how they feel about safety overall. What stands out the most is the effort from our company to let us know the importance of safety. Knowledge is the key for prevention says Angela Gomez, drafting and engineering supervisor.
Adds Noel Maldonado, controller, After a good five years of talking, training and observing, now everybody believes in safety as a way of life. It is the commitment of all the company employees.
Coreslab Structures’ safety commitment permeates throughout, from top management down. Anytime there is a safety concern, it is handled promptly and effectively, says James Spears, batch plant operator.
