Factoring responses from 1,600-plus U.S. design and construction professionals, the 4th Annual Green Building Survey indicates a nearly 5 point drop in support (62 percent) for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design project certification from 2008 to 2009, but abundant (92 percent) overall support for green building methods. Construction costs are a major driver in this economic downturn, reflected in the past two yearsÌ growing gap between support of LEED certification and green building methods.
Green Building Survey is compiled by California attorneys Allen Matkins; Constructive Technologies Group, Irvine, Calif.; and, Green Building Insider, Bethesda, Md. Survey authors foresee a decrease in green building project costs upon growth of related professional experience and widespread building code adoption. In 2009, they add, the global green building industry exceeded $550 billion, continuing a compounded annual growth rate pacing more than 100 percent through 2015.
