Precast Box Culverts Impound Leed Credits

Dallas-based UT Southwestern Medical Center enlisted Hanson Pipe & Precast in its pursuit of U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for Phase 5 of the organization’s building master plan. After Halff and Associates in Dallas Û with the precaster’s assistance Û engineered an underground detention system to collect rainwater runoff for use by area sprinklers, Hanson’s Grand Prairie, Texas, facility supplied a series of in-line box culverts to implement the design. Accordingly, the precast components comprise an efficient system that accommodates limited space and flotation risks at the site; plus, their ease of installation was a boon for contractor Wright Construction.

Using box culverts Û one of the most commonly fabricated Hanson products Û for runoff impoundment reduces consumption of potable water outdoors and, thereby, contributes to LEED certification. That goal is further advanced by a precast mix design incorporating recycled material content. Moreover, supplying components from a local Hanson facility minimized the project’s transportation-related costs and carbon footprint.

With the rise in LEED certified projects, notes Hanson Building Products President Richard Manning, our customers can use the high-quality, reliable products they have purchased for years to meet new project criteria that will benefit generations to come. Primary among Hanson’s corporate strategies, officials emphasize, is continued focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship, while maintaining high quality standards.

Adds Wright Construction’s John Kolb, Working with Hanson on this project, we were able to achieve efficient, intelligent and sustainable design. Hanson’s product was cost-effective and easier to install than similar products on the market.
