The Tekla, Inc. Education Program is supplying Middle Tennessee State University’s (MTSU) Concrete Industry Management (CIM) staff with Tekla Structures, a suite of 3-D Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. The technology’s arrival at the charter CIM program coincides with major American Concrete Institute, ACI Strategic Development Council and Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute initiatives to standardize BIM around cast-in-place and precast concrete building components and systems. The industry groups, in turn, are responding to the architectural/engineering/construction community’s adoption of the three-dimensional capabilities of BIM over two-dimensional CAD methodologies.
The Murfreesboro, Tenn., CIM faculty is scheduled to begin Tekla platform training this month, to be followed by Estimating class students who will compile course-grade modeling projects. CIM officials plan to introduce BIM elements freshman year and require sophomores to prepare modeling demonstrations. Assignments with the software will accompany junior year courses, while seniors will utilize BIM in their capstone projects.
