Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) in Austin, Texas, is a multiuse facility that serves general and commercial aviation, the State Aircraft Pooling Board, and the Texas Army National Guard. When concrete spalling was detected at construction joints on the airport’s parallel runways, facility engineers developed a rehabilitation project to repair all existing spalls, since broken concrete pieces drawn into an aircraft engine can cause severe damage.
Transpo’s T17 Methyl Methacrylate Polymer Concrete was selected to complete the rehabilitation, as the repair material had to have high compressive bond strength and rapid cure time to minimize runway downtime. Waterproof T17 provides a strong chemical bond [no cold joints] and is freeze/thaw, chemical, and UV light resistant. Its large application temperature range (14_-100_F) and rapid cure time (45 minutes at 70_F) enabled a quick return to service. Moreover, no special equipment was required.
